Abstract Modern Interpretations of "Snow White" To most people, the story of "Snow White" evokes Disney's versions of seven dwarfs whistling as they work, and a wide-eyed, fluttery princess singing, "Some day my prince will come." Disney's well-known film version of the story, released in 1937, was based on the German tale popularized by the Brothers Grimm. But several versions of "Snow White" existed even before the Grimms or the Disney. Before the advent of printing, the "Snow White" theme was present in many folk tales. In 1634, the earliest printed version based on the "Snow White" theme of the oral tales called "The Young Slave" was published in Italy. "Snow White" has been reproduced in oral, print and film media for several centuries, and the tale's characters, narrative structure, and symbols seemed to remain the same, while the messages, theme and medium changed. In modern times, transformations of "Snow White" are in continual process. Modern writers and anthologists began to reconsider "Snow White", finding that there is much more to be said to the old material. In chapters Ⅱ to Ⅳ, the modern interpretations of "Snow White" with Donald Barthelme's Snow White, Anne Sexton's "Snow White ant the Seven Dwarfs" and Angela Carter's "The Snow Child" are analyzed in terms of thematic variations reflecting the spirit of the age. Barthelme's Snow White is a typical work of postmodernism literature that places emphasis on personality, autonomy, and diversity. Barthelme makes readers read his work from their point of view and create more meanings than author's intention by utilizing parody and collage technique, and breaking the traditional writing method. Therefore, many critics are making a variety of interpretations about this work such as a failure of language and literature tradition, one of the modern consumption capitalism's evils, a problem of public politics, or a racial issue of American society. This thesis will focus on the identity and subjectivity of the Snow White in the absence of prince. In her poem "The Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", Sexton considers, the aspect of woman's value and role, that the patriarchal world of Germany described by Brothers Grimm and modern American society are fundamentally similar. She asserted the social status of womanhood never changed and still existed in the 20th century in America. Therefore, Sexton criticizes the conventional fantasy and the so called 'beauty myth'. She seems to think modern women also pursue the traditional images of women and to reinterpret the Grimms' fairy tale with the perspective of the 20th American society. Angela Carter's "The Snow Child" criticizes a power structure of the medieval patriarchy which is still in effect in modern times. The attacker is her father, a baron, at this work, and both Snow White and her stepmother are put into the victim's position. It is obvious that Snow White became her father's sexual object and her stepmother was the victim of society. The stepmother must have used her own survival strategy as a parasite on the current system within such a power structure. Through her new interpretation, Carter criticizes the social dichotomy system of modern world of male domination and female submission by borrowing a pornography. Three modern interpretations of "Snow White", examined throughout this paper, do not add a few simple decorations to the eternal motif but suggest new modern implications of the "Snow White". Each "Snow White" story is recreated into a new story that reflects the spirit of the age by modern authors. The "Snow White" motif will be emerging everlastingly as a treasure pot through new interpretations and transformations by the future creative writers.
