This study presents a feminist approach to the Cinderella story, particularly as it is presented in “Cinderella”, “Yeh-hsien”, “Lin-Lan”, “The Princess in the Suit of Leather”, “Donkeyskin”, “Catskin”, six stories from diverse times and places. Particularly, it claims that sexist and patriarchal ideology underlies the stories' internal structure and the stories show clearly that a male-dominated society has made women internalize poor concepts of womanly beauty, thereby permanently suppressing them. To support this claim, this study firstly notes three types of conflict among family members, particularly between siblings, stepdaughter- stepmother, and daughter-father. The first type conflict, the sibling rivalry shows that the stepsisters' reign over the heroine gets stabilization and power from a patrilineal society. The second type conflict, by marrying, the stepmother acquires power from her husband, and with her power she treats her stepdaughter cruelly. The third type conflict describes that the existence of a father in the stories is insignificant, seemingly having little influence on family in the first three stories, while he forces his own daughter to marry him, showing his sexual desire in the last three stories. The women in the stories are punished more harshly than the men. Infinite tolerance is allowed to men only. Secondly, the thesis explores two typical definitions and images of women in the stories and analyzes the gender stereotypes of heroines and the roles of female characters. Specifically, the female characters in the stories are extremely polarized: the major characters are the good and beautiful women, while the minor ones are the bad and ugly women. Furthermore, in most cases, the vicious female characters who bother the heroines are stepmothers. Male-dominant values compels women to be physically beautiful, obedient, patient, and passive. Thus, as children read the stories, they tend to accept old-fashioned patriarchism unconsciously and to assume misguidedly that men are active but women are passive. Lastly, this paper studies the aspects of women in marriage. A happy marriage has three features: confinement in a small place, passiveness in behavior and rise of social status. This means that androcentrism is deep-rooted in society and it has made women powerless and incapable of economic and intellectual independence: androcentrism has made women permanently passive and obedient to men. This study has implications that children are so lacking in judgment that they might accept the overt messages, particularly the gender stereotypes thoughtlessly. Teachers should know that the Cinderella story continues to influence on children's growth. When teachers use fairy tales at school, they should help children to understand them without prejudices or wrong identity of gender.
