The purpose of this study is to understand the place of 'Nu-jung'(pavilion or gazebo) essentially by analyzing user's life at the behavioral place, Nu-jung, through looking into paintings and books made in the Joseon Dynasty period and by applying it into structural features of the Jukseoroo(Jukseo gazebo) and Kyungpodae(Kyungpo gazebo). For this purpose, I closely interpreted the two Nu-jungs based on Korean Traditional Architecture and inquired the life of people uesing Nu-jung. And the result is like this.
1) Juk Seo Roo It wsa established theory that the Jukseoroo which was five Kan(block)s widened by adding a Kan(block) on to the both side of it to build an extension, but it was found that this was not just for extension, it was to give a special meaning to the space. And the followings are findings about it.
First, it was figured out through analyzing paintings and books made in the Joseon Dynasty period that a number and placement of pillar of entrance showed their social rank. The north side which has three pillar was proved to be a higher seat(seat of honor) because 'Woo-mul' ceiling is there, and it was made for providing stability and accessibility.
Second, 'Kong-po' is known for having two different architecture styles, 'Ikgong' and 'Jushimpo', but after observing the features of 'Kong-po' elaborately, we do know it could be divided into four spaces based on the its' direction and placement : ① a higher seat showing their high social level, ② both spaces being sides of the higher seat, ③ two entrances : one is nearby the higher seat and the other is opposite of the higher seat, ④ space at the corner. It is interpreted to exhaustively separate means of each space which is in the Jukseoroo. The inside five Kans were built in 'Jushimpo' style using two 'Choolmoks', but the outside Kans were built in 'Ikgong' style using one 'Choolmok', meaning that the space of five Kans ornamentally emphasizes that it is a more inner space than that of outside Kans.
Third, the pictures painted by 'Kim, hong do' and 'Jeong, soen' show that the part of the higher seat under the 'Woo-mul' ceiling is clearly separated from other inside part by a well and it means that it is more inner than other parts. I also saw some grooves at regular interval on the face of structural member being vertical. It was regarded as a vestige of equipments designed to separate the higher seat from outside more clearly.
Fourth, Nu-jung and even small Jung-jas were built with the hipped-and-gable roof to keep their view-condition well and it have us see in all directions. In this reason, it is less likely that the Gaek-sa Jin ju kwan‘s biggest Nu-jung, Jukseoroo, in Samcheok was built with Gambrel roof when it had only five Kans.
Fifth, If there were still five Kans without extension, there was no way to enter the Jukseoroo because it was placed in the middle of rocky place, like an island and even there is bad condition to install device for entering it due to its topographical characteristics. Even if the device have been installed at that time. it would spoil the landscape.
Lastly, in the paintings of a banquet, their seats are distinguished by their social position ,and which direction they had to take was decided depending on what they did at the banquet. They also made a difference at each space of interiors in phase and they took a specific part according to the factors mentioned above. So the stone stylobate placed at the furthermost place from the higher seat to the south on the rocky place is considered a secondary zone for court musician.
2) Kyungpodae
First, the purpose of the Kyungpodae‘s vertical difference is unusual among the Nu-jungs and tis' difference is considered to build it with view right and to be showed to people gracefully. they separately or subordinately made a special space for enjoying landscape, and it device the place in the Kyungpodae into two part. One is for look out landscape. The other is for a banquet.
Second, to make a space for a banquet, it made sections in phase involving particular characters having spatial behavior by the difference to whether floor and balustrade is existing or not. The ornamental character is to give a difference to a entrance at the square space.
In a result of this study, each nu-jung was built to suit the user's purpose and such as what kinds of banquets they had held at there and who had been using it. The inside space at a Nu-jung is not separated from outside, but many different type of space were compounded in phase at the Nu-jung. Besides, the constitution of the spaces could be changed by the purpose of the banquet. When doing study on a Nu-jung, usually focused too much only on the architectural characters, but the looking over and analyzing closely user's behavioral patterns at a Nu-jung help understand a Nu-jung essentially.
