This study purposes to consider the direction aesthetics of Eimuntas Nekrošius who has been most highlighted among the contemporary directors, and analyzed substantially the direction style of Nekrošius focused on the direction style in the Hamlet. The dramas of Nekrošius have close relationship with his own life. Nekrošius grew up in a small village in a country of Lithuania after the World War II. And he started directing under the governance of past Soviet Union. However, his dramas were philosophical rather than social. His dramas rooted in the world view of pantheism which has been influenced by the distinct nature and culture of Lithuania. And the various symbols and signs that were originated from the archetype of consciousness of Lithuania were transformed to modern theatrical language. The politic, social, and cultural aspects of Lithuania greatly affected the Nekrošius’ world of direction. The tendency of Nekrošius’ direction of stage was divided into the initial experimental actions, unique interpretation of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, grotesque expression around Shakespeare, and the strengthened enjoyment of literature. At the beginning, Nekrošius didn’t focus his drama on the text, but concentrated on creating a series of images to symbolize and convey stories. Without compromising the nature and cores, he re-interpreted the scenes and characters of the works of Chekhov, and removed perfectly the melodramas in Chekhov’s works on the stage of Nekrošius. About the Shakespeare’s works, Nekrošius used the material objects from the nature to strengthen grotesque expressions, while interpreting the interaction of the actors and objets in forms of ‘play’. And finally, though Nekrošius greatly increased the enjoyment by presenting many objets and plays in making the dramas from the literature works, he gave the probable disputes about his works that were hard to find out the cores due to lack of logic. On the basis as stated above, this study analyzed the directing style of Nekrošius , basing on the play Hmlet, which is considered the wholly expression of his directing techniques. The 4 aspects, re-interpretation of scenes and character, the expression of plays, the semiotic expression, and the audible expression, were specifically analyzed. First, the drama Hamlet tells the story of a son and his father, around death that the most common explored issue and truth. The drama made the origin work of Shakespeare greatly condensed around weak and frail Hamlet and a spirit that has the image of water and fire, but it didn’t miss the dramatic structure of the origin work. Further, Nekrošius made the core of the origin work more stick out of the surface by re-interpretation of the characters. Second, the Hamlet was composed of diverse ‘plays’ in the relationship of between actors, between the actors and the languages, and between the actors and the objets. Nekrošius filled the empty spaces derived from the condensing and restructuring with the visual languages spoken by the physical moves. The plays based on the improvised actions present the elements of action, performance, enjoyment, contingency, and the process. In the dramas of Nekrošius, the enjoyment was especially prominent. Third, in the Hamlet, the setting up for playing that focused on the enjoyment was presented on the empty space composed of the objets only. The objets on the empty space was considered the ambiguous signifier first, but it produced gradually the different signified in the chain of meaning. The primitive and natural objets including water, fire, and iron released the strongest energy on the stage. On the empty stage, the objets on the fundamental of materiality and the physical actions of the actors showed the origin figure of the naked human. Fourth, the audible images in the Hamlet are as important as the visual images. The various audible images, from the melody of piano and barrel organ, to the citations from Giuseppe Verdi, recorded voices, and through sounds by the objets on the stage, are rhythmical and visionary, and always exist in undefined forms on the stage. And they express the emotional interactions, as well as the inner states of the characters. The dramas of Nekrošius are simple and plain, but instinctive and directive. Nekrošius figures his symbolic aesthetic by the simple minimalism approach. He strengthens the power of the dramas by making the essential ones that allow to be experienced the reality and immediacy. The dramas of Nekrošius, which restored the properties of drama, were completed with his microcosmic view and aesthetic choices, and opened the new horizon for modern drama.
