The purpose of the thesis is to suggest an effective method for teaching Korean culture using "mask dance drama", based on the examination and analysis of the current situation of Korean culture education presented to foreign learners.
It is widely believed that the purpose of learning Korean language is to develop a communicative competence in Korean. Actually lots of Korean courses focus only on linguistic aspect of communication. However, this approach has a limitation to acquire a language, because under this approach learners are taught rather normative and standardized language than authentic and natural language. In order to use Korean naturally, they must understand Korean culture. A person with a good understanding of Korea and Korean culture, even though he or she doesn't have a good command of Korean, would be able to cope with various situations that need Korean proficiency beyond his or her level. On the other hand, a person who speaks Korean without understanding of Korean culture would be in trouble dealing with difficult situations. In this sense, to understand a culture based on the background knowledge of it is more important than just to have linguistic competence. This explains the tendency of increasing discussions on culture education in teaching Korean as a foreign language for the purpose of developing the quality of Korean language education.
Considering the situations above, I suggest a concrete and specific method for teaching Korean language and culture using "mask dance drama", because traditional literature is one of the most effective and interesting texts not only for developing communicative competence, but also for understanding Korean traditional values, world view, ethnic traits, thoughts, etc. and Korean modern life, as well. Among various genres of Korean traditional literature, I selected "mask dance drama" as the topic of the study, because it possesses both particularity of Korean culture mentioned above and universality as world literature, and, therefore, it can touch foreign leaners and give them literary interest in addition to an understanding of Korean traditional culture.
