A study for effects of wellness experiences at hot springs on quality of life : comparison berween Korea and Japan원문보기

The advancement and development of industries have caused excessive mental stress as well as physical stress. Thus people have invested huge interest in the improvement of mental health as well as physical health and further wellness. Their increasing needs for a healthy life and stress relief have led to increasing interest in hot springs. Thus this study set out to investigate changes to quality of wellness and life through the use of hot springs and further changes to quality of life through wellness. There is a need to develop hot springs tourism by understanding how effective it can be with wellness and quality of life. The study surveyed Koreans who had been to Korean hot springs and Japanese who had been to Japanese hot springs. Total 200 questionnaires were distributed to the Korean and Japanese sample each with 172 and 178 collected from the Japanese and Korean sample, respectively. Total 350 questionnaires were used in analysis. Using the SPSS 12.0 program, it conducted frequency analysis for the respondents' general characteristics and hot springs and obtained Cronbach's α to test each construct's reliability and validity. It also carried out descriptive statistics analysis to examine each item's information and regression analysis to examine the impacts of the wellness index on quality of life. Finally, t-test was performed to check mean differences between the Koreans and Japanese. The research findings were as follows. First, the quality of hot springs(water quality, efficacy, and temperature) affected wellness, which suggests that it is important how much good quality hot springs they can offer. Second, wellness turned out to affect all the factors of quality of life including physical, social, mental, intellectual and emotional factors, which implies that the quality of hot springs(water quality, efficacy and temperature) improves wellness quality, which in turn improves quality of life. Third, there was the biggest mean difference in the quality of hot springs between the Japanese and Koreans with the latter recording a higher mean, which indicates that the Koreans have more interest in the water quality, efficacy and temperature of hot springs than the Japanese. In addition, the significant differences in subsidiary facilities between them indicate that the Koreans are more concerned with the factors of loyal customers including the entire hot springs with their subsidiary facilities such as the entertainment facilities, exercise facilities, swimming pool, and coffee shop as well as the factors of a hot spring itself including water quality, efficacy and temperature than the Japanese. Finally, there were overall significant mean differences in wellness between the two groups with especially big differences in mental, intellectual, and emotional wellness, which means that hot springs have greater mental influences on the Koreans than the Japanese and can enormous impacts on their stress relief. Based on those findings, the study made the following suggestions. First, the study has limitations with the subjects as the survey scope was restricted to Tokyo, Japan and downtown Seoul to find those who had experiences with hot springs. Considering that there are plenty of hot springs in local areas both in Japan and Korea, the sample fails to represent the population. In addition, the study surveyed mostly the younger generations. Future study needs to reflect the reality that many of hot springs users are the older generations and include more diverse age groups. Thus it will be desirable to have broader samples to include the middle-aged and elderly population across the nation both in Korea and Japan and accordingly increase the explanatory power of the study. Secondly, future study also needs to investigate spa therapy beyond the result that hot springs are effective in improving wellness and quality of life.
