This study aims to understand reasons of game addiction of teenagers, develop physical activity programs to prevent game addiction and suggest methods of activation of the same. For the purposes, a survey was conducted to the objects of 400 middle school students in Seoul. Also, Outreach Movement Program (OMP) was tested for effects of prevention of game addiction through game addiction, Internet addiction and the observer's teenager Internet addiction self-diagnosis method (K-Scale by the National Information Society Agency) with 10 middle school students in Seoul from the high-risk group of game addiction. The summary of the conclusion from this study, the survey and the test is as shown below.
The summary of the survey result is a follows:
First, according to the research related to game usage, there were potential-risk group with risk of game addiction (16%) and high-risk group (9.0%). Teenagers participating in physical activities showed percentages of potential-risk group (5.1%) and high-risk group (2.3%) relatively lower than those of teenagers not participating in physical activities, which are potential-risk group (7.1%) and high-risk group (2.7%). The rates of teenagers' playing games were 79.5% during week days and 89.5% in Sundays and holidays for the cases of playing more than 2 hours a day in average and the rate of playing games for more than 4 times a week was 33.8%. Mainly, 'My Home' was the place that the most respondents answered, 78.7%, more boys than girls and teenagers in higher addiction levels of games use 'PC-Bang' more. The rate of teenagers using PC-Bang more than once a week at least was 75.9%. Also, boys with higher level of game addiction showed higher frequency of use than girls. 61.6% of them have intention to participate in OMP for leisure activities. The reasons for teenagers who are already addicted to games or with high possibility of addiction are low self-control, concentration and self-esteem among personal psychological characteristics.
The summary of search result is as below:
Based on the literature review and the survey, the reasons of teenagers' game addiction were investigated and the contents of OMP to prevent teenagers from game addiction was organized. For the test of OMP, 10 middle school students of 7th and 8th grades (5 boys and 5 girls) in high-risk game addiction group were selected and the test was conducted twice per week for seven weeks. The conclusion is as follows: First, the 10 students in the Internet high-risk group showed serious levels in the items of game-oriented (53-83), tolerance control loss (57-86) and withdrawal and emotional experiences (55-61).
Second, in the result of self-diagnosis (K-Scale self-diagnosis) on Internet addiction after the participation in OMP, there are improvements in obstacles in daily life, positive expectation, withdrawal, virtual relationship orientation, acts of deviance and tolerance. Two of the existing high-risk group were improved to be in the general group (index 26 points and 37 points) and five (48 points) were improved to be in potential-risk group. It means that OMP affects positively on Internet addiction. However, three of the participants (two girls and one boy) are still in high-risk group but their addiction indices were 53 points, somewhat improved.
Third and finally, in the result of teenager observers' Internet addiction diagnosis evaluation (K-scale 20 questions for observers), three of the objects appeared as general users, five were users of potential-risk and two were users of high-risk. Two of the users of potential-risk marked 3 points in addiction index, 1 point higher than that of the general users (2 points), but it seems that they will be able to be converted to general users with constant management in the future.
