All creatures on Earth, including human beings, can be influenced by the power frequency electromagnetic field (EMF), although the effects vary according to regional context, species, etc. Most outstanding scientific achievements related to the EMF effect on life have come from behavioral studies. In such studies, in contrast to the geomagnetic field or static magnetic field (MF), the oscillating MF has attracted far less attention so far. Following a previous report, this study characterized the 60-Hz MF-responsive locomotive activity of common cutworm, Spodoptera litura larvae using more sophisticated experimental schemes to obtain a deeper understanding of the effect of an extremely low frequency (ELF) MF on animal behavior. Interestingly, third instar larvae showed significantly reduced locomotive activity when exposed to the MF compared to sham exposure. Moreover, the same larvae exposed to an MF up to three times showed basically the same behavioral responsiveness, even though the decreased movement was attenuated along with the consecutive exposure. In separate experiments using various MF intensities the locomotivity of the larvae also decreased. Additionally observed the maximal decrease was at 1 mT. There seems to be no significant correlation between the exposure duration and the decrease. These results suggest that power frequency MF could disrupt the normal locomotive activity of the larvae, and that the insect may show adaptive desensitization to the MF.
