Before the advent the technology of space based satellite navigation system like GPS, structural deformation monitoring had been normally conducted by geodetic surveying instruments and geotechnical measurements. Geodetic surveying instruments such as the EDM, precise levelling, and laser interferometry are using for measuring the minute displacement. Geotechnical measurements such as the tiltmeter, strainmeter, and jointmeter are installed on the construction and observed the displacement of structures in real time. However, the previous mentioned instruments have led to specific limitations in terms of well-operation. · Not be marked by absolute coordinate · Big influence due to environmental factors such as temperature, weather and wind and significant natural disasters such as earthquake and typhoon When occurring these situations, there should not be well-worked structural deformation monitoring in the real time. Moreover in order to conquest these, there must be necessary for installing the additional sensors to an object thereafter, being continuous the maintenance, management and periodical observation as well. It is well-known the GPS can deliver the most reliable and strongest positioning solution to users regardless applications. Besides, current satellites systems can be operated on well-integrated system named GNSS. Therefore, in this study, the author applied for GPS to monitor the displacement of bridge in order to deal with the above limitations. The operation of GPS not only is quite easy for maintenance and management compared to other traditional sensors but also can measure movements of bridge even under the unexpected situation. MaChang Bridge that is cable stayed bridge has 400m main span was selected as a test-bed and this was experimented for over two hours on 2nd November 2009. For this test, total 5 receivers were used, three of these were receiving data on the bridge's deck as a rover. Another two receivers were installed on stable ground close to the bridge within one kilometer and these played a role as a reference station. A communication between rovers and reference stations was relatively good. This mens that LOS(Line of Sight) kept on picth and can checked by the DOP value for the period of observation. Data achieved by receivers were post-processed by RTK(Real Time Kinematic). Analysis for this test is divided into three parts. The first part is an investigation with regard to vertical component movement. The second part is the analysis of torsional movement. The last part is related to a natural frequency. As a this result, it has been proven that GPS is capable of tracking movements of large flexible structures to the centimeter level. The torsional movement of the deck has also been detected while the bridge was subjected to traffic loading. It has also been demonstrated that GPS is also capable of detecting natural frequency.
