As Korea is becoming an aging society, the issue of elderly people has become a serious problem that cannot be put off any more. The interest in the elderly with diseases is escalating as the problem of caring for them has become an important issue. Caring of the elderly people by their filial children with Confucian tradition cannot be expected in the contemporary society. Therefore, caring for each other between married couples is becoming more common than care by the children. Caring has been generally regarded as women's work by social norms, and thus it has been regarded as natural that the wife takes care of her husband. Many cases of the wives taking care of their sick husbands are often witnessed around. However, it is not yet common to see husbands taking care of their wives. The fact that women's life expectancy is generally longer than that of men makes the chances higher for women to care for their husbands than the other way around. This study intends to focus on the experiences of the husbands who take care of their sick wives. Especially, it attempts to understand the experiences of the husbands whose wives are stroke patients because stroke is one of the most common diseases for the elderly which requires a long-term care. The purpose of this study is to fully understand the meaning and processes of the experience of the husbands who take care of their sick elderly wives through the husbands' interpretation of the experience by conducting a qualitative research. It will raise social welfare interest in the elderly male caregivers of their wives with stroke, which have not been known widely so far, and provide a basis on which effective and distinguished approach and policies for them can be developed. This study uses phenomenological research methods. Purposive sampling and snow ball sampling were used to select data among those collected by in-depth interviews and participant observation. There are six research participants who have taken care of their wives, who were diagnosed as stroke patients, for two to sixteen years. They are 61, 70, 71, 74, 75, and 80 years old each, and have cared for their spouses for 2, 7, 7, 12, 15, and 16 years respectively. Among the spouses of the research participants, three suffer a cerebral hemorrhage and the other three suffer a cerebral infarction. The research was conducted for eight months from July 3, 2009 to March 2, 2010, during which time frequent in-depth interviews were conducted. comparative data analysis was continuously done while the data were collected. At the early stage of data analysis, concepts were drawn from the in-depth interviews. The concepts thus drawn were classified and placed into subcategories. 186 concepts, 32 subcategories, and 10 categories were drawn as the result of this research. Overall, it seems appropriate to structuralize the caring experience temporally since the accident or event of stroke can be experienced and connected within temporal context throughout the past, present, and future with the present at its center. We could see a relatively consistent pattern. We distinguished three periods - the period of occurance, adaptation, and maturity, and named each period as "stroke, the uninvited guest of twilight years of one's life," "the soft light at dusk," "the sunset, the end of the twilight," respectively. The research explores the husbands' experiences from the moment when their wives have a stroke without any preparation or prior knowledge of the disease. The biggest fear at this stage is to lose one's spouse due to the stroke. Although the wives have survived the shocking experience of stroke, they are not who they used to be any more. All of the wives of the research participants suffer at least hemiparalysis and are in a condition that they cannot do anything, including relieving oneself, without help. Gradually, the husbands realize that their wives cannot recover beyond certain limit and enter the "adaptation period" when the patients are cared for at home. During this period, the husbands get accustomed to caregiving in various ways and feel joyful and rewarded with any little progress their wives show. They still have hopes and expectations at this stage. Their relationship with their spouse, children, and neighbors grow and develop during this period. Although it depends on the degree or relapse of the stroke, this period usually begins after around a year since the initial stroke. However, as the time passes and the caring period gets extended, not only the patients but also the husbands age and start to introspect about the time left in their lives. Although the existing literature on caretaking of stroke patients has reported mainly on the negative aspects of the caring experience, this study has attempted to deal also with the bright and positive aspects of the experiences of the husbands who take care of their sick wives. The period of maturity that comes after the period of adaptation is when the husband caregivers have achieved inner maturity through their experience of caring for their spouses and embrace the end of life with peaceful mind. The husbands' attitude of life would be able to be assessed as a positive experience when it is seen as valuable human maturity gained through their experience of trying their best to take care of their wives. The attitude is in line with the process of self-integration at senescence among the Erickson's social psychological stages of development when one embraces death and adjust himself to the given circumstances with peace of mind.
