Abstract
This study is aimed at examining changes appeared on Delacroix's Orientalism paintings by comparing paintings before and after his travel to Morocco and ascertaining significance of the changes. Existing studies on Orientalism paintings of Delacroix concentrated their attention on exotic theme of the Orient as part of Romanticism, and as a result, they failed to ascertain significance of changes made on his paintings after his travel to Morocco. While his works in the 1820s depicted sensual and violent aspects of the Orient in a dramatic way from the viewpoint of incidents and literary works at the time, works after his travel to the Orient painted figures of daily lives in a quiet way through the harmony of light with colors. This study examined the following aspects to ascertain significance of changes expressed in Delacroix's works.
To understand characteristics of Delacroix's works in the 1820s, we should, first of all, look into the periodical background of the nineteenth century. During this period, Delacroix painted works with the theme of the Orient more than in any other periods, and this is closely related with imperialistic policy of Europe at the time. Delacroix couldn't make free depiction or mention in his Orientalism paintings in the nineteenth century as he did in earlier paintings due to the then imperialistic atmosphere. Early works of Delacroix are also appreciated from this imperialistic viewpoint as he took themes for them from incidents or literature at the time. As a result of it, the Orient that Delacroix imagined before he experienced the Islam world at first hand reflected sensual and violent perspective of the French painters at the time.
Works of Delacroix made after the travel to Morocco in 1832 reveal changes in many aspects as ascertained from his diary and letters. Although in his later paintings, Delacroix depicted the Orient in a sensual and violent way as he did in his earlier works, he refrained from expressing them in a dramatic way as he had used to do in his earlier paintings. While his works in the 1820s were produced adding his imagination to the expressions borrowed from incidents and literature at the time in a sensational way far from the reality, his works after his travel to Morocco displayed new interpretation of the truth he acquired at the travel. As a result, his works after 1832 show Moroccan daily lives as he experienced at first hand. In the aspect of configuration, the works reveal calm and harmonious configuration along with refined external intensity. The most remarkable change made after his travel to Morocco is the disappearance of dissonance between arrangement of strong colors and contrast of color tones, and in place of it, appearance of harmony between light and colors. Delacroix's first-hand experience had a great influence on painters who had not been to the Orient, and the harmony between light and colors led the progress of Romanticism to Impressionism.
Changes happened to Delacroix after his travel to Morocco as we examined above have important significance in art history. Disregarding changes displayed in the Oriental paintings of Delacroix, art history concerned with Delacroix's works has focused discussions only on thematic aspects of his works, and as a result, significant studies have not been made about changes appeared in his works after his travel to Morocco. This study examined Delacroix's works divided into two groups by the year of 1832 when he travelled to Morocco, and it is the significance of this study that it has ascertained changes appeared in his works after his travel to Morocco.
