Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder which is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. It is most frequently caused by upper airway blockage and the OSA (obstructed sleep apnea) is attacking 2-4% of the middle aged people. Till now, standard laboratory based PSG (polysomnography) is considered as the most reliable sleep monitoring system, and there are many other little channeled or home based sleep monitoring systems in use. However, most of current existing systems are highly expensive and contain too many channels, moreover, they need too many sensors to be attached, and most of them do not include any feedback mechanism other than monitoring signals during sleep. Therefore, it calls for the development of a system with minimum channels for sleep monitoring under unrestrained and unconscious conditions for the users. New system has been designed with a pillow and a pad. The pillow with PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) vibration sensors detect and restrain snoring events; the pad with air bag inside collects oscillation signals for respiration, heart beat and body movement from a pressure sensor. Two male subjects participated in the experiment for evaluation of the developed system. Duration for data collection was set to 30 seconds, and underwent two repetitions. Air bladders were put inside the pillow to restrain snoring by inflating the bladder. Clinical evaluation was performed at the sleep center to verify effectiveness of the anti-snore pillow. Two volunteers participated for two nights with the use of PSG. Snoring times were reduced 49.8% and 63% for each volunteer, and the number of snoring episodes was reduced about 62.9% and increased about 58.3% for each study. Longest snoring episodes were reduced about 43.8% and 95% for two subjects, respectively. The results indicate that the new system is reliable to diagnose respiratory events, heartbeat, and body movement when the user is in a normal and calm state during sleep; meanwhile, the anti-snore pillow effectively reduces the total snoring time and discontinues snoring whenever it detects snoring sound. Keywords: sleep apnea, snoring, unrestrained, unconscious, pillow and pad, anti snore pillow
