ABSTRACT The effect of adjuvant cold therapy before Continuous Passive Motion on pain management in elderly total knee replacement patients Park Sun Young Department of Nursing Graduate School of Life Sciences Catholic University of Pusan (Supervised by professor Shim, Hyung Wha) Many elderly who had total knee replacement are suffering from pain during continuous passive motion. This study was conducted to determine the effect of adjuvant cold therapy followed by continuous passive motion on pain after CPM. This is a non-equivalent control group time series design. Primary data pool is 60 elderly patients who were admitted to orthopedic ward in general hospital located in P after having total knee replacement. 30 patients between July 1st and September 15th in 2010 and 30 patients between September 16th and November 30th in 2010 were allocated to control group and experimental group, respectively. Adjuvant cold therapy was applied for 20 minutes to the joint transplanted and followed by CPM. Pain was measured by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The data was analyzed using SPSS WIN 11.0 and its repeated measure of ANOVA, p-test and t-test scores, percentage, mean and standard deviation were studied. The results of this study were as follows; 1. The adjuvant cold therapy before Continuous Passive Motion was significantly reduced in the experimental group. There was a significant statistical difference between two group (F=19.965, p=.001). 2. The adjuvant cold therapy before Continuous Passive Motion showed a statistical difference in the dose of analgesic. There was a significant statistical difference between two group (F=57.044, p=.001). Having been proved likewise, it is suggested that the adjuvant cold therapy is related with the post exercise pain relief and less frequent use of analgesics in total knee replaced elderly patients. And in a similar way, it is also considered to contribute much in elderly patient in recovery after total knee replacement. Key word: Continuous Passive Motion (CPM), Pain, Cold therapy.
