This thesis is focused on the subjectivity, which is reflected in Lee Byeong-Ju's novels. This is to pay attention to the responses of the problematic individual who had to face with socio-historical repression of the korean society in the 20th century. The protagonists in the novels of Lee Byeong-Ju had undergone the socio-politico repressions. Therefore, the defining process of the subjectivity in his novels has something to do with disclosing of the substantial power of anti-communist liberalism, which is the dominant ideology of South Korea after the liberation from the japanese colonial rule. It is well known that Lee Byeong-Ju' novels have not drawn enough attention from korean academy due to the political complexity so that literary evaluation on his novels have not fully done. In this sense, the research on the subjectivity of Lee Byeong-Ju's novels will provide a new and objective momentum for the re-evaluating process on his novels. Lee's protagonists are shown to confess the social injustice directly, though they sometimes use metaphor or metonymy for disclosing it. From subjectivity's perspective, Lee's novels can be classified into three modules. Firstly, his novels are dealing with the subjectivity, which is struggling from the modern trauma. Secondly, his novels are providing some illusory subjectivity, which is recognizing the fear of symbolic order of modernity. Thirdly, his novels are dealing with an ethical subject which is making a chasm to the symbolic order. The first subjectivity shown in Lee's novels is the subjectivity under repression by the Other. The subjectivity in his novels is not fighting against the dominant ideology. It rather locates itself to the position of the servant to repeat the discourse of the master. The subject is normally constructed in the relation with the other. But his subjects are exceptionally dependent on the lack of subjectivity. This symptom is well described in the novels which are dealing with Lee, Seung Man's regime. The second type of subjectivity shown in Lee's novels is illusory subjectivity. This thesis is focusing on the frustration of the protagonists who successfully entered into the realm of symbolic order of the world. Lacan's highlight is shed on the demand from the desire. His protagonists are dreaming of the desire in connection with the demand. The subject in his theory is trying to recover his or her subjectivity out of the alienation through the practical engagement into the social demand. "Object a" is always moving from one position to another by changing its' form and content. The subject which is searching for the "Object A" as the target of an ultimate goal of life is destined to face with the frustration because of "Object A's fluctuating movement." Thus, the subject is beginning to realize that the target that it has to meet is not "Object A" but "object a", which is the all the way changing. The final form of subjectivity shown in Lee's novels is an ethical subjectivity, which is crossing over the repressive order, created by the Symbolic. It can be called "the return of the oppressed." "The real" in Lee's novels is shown as a form of unfamiliar reality, which is causing the break to the symbolic order as well as "object a". In conclusion, this thesis is dealing with the multiple issues which are taking place in the middle of the subjectivity and the Other. Lee's novels treat the relatively wide range of times from 1930s to 1980s as the historical background of the novel-writing. This era belongs to the tribulent times in the modern korean history. Lee Byeong-Ju's novels are directly gazing at this hard times by creating some unique and typical subjectivity as a reflection of the reality.
