Inorganic fouling is one of the critical operational issues in reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. Inorganic fouling occurs on a membrane surface due to increases in concentrations over solubility by retaining ions on the membrane feed side. CaCO3 precipitates have been the most probable foulants for seawater and wastewater reuse application. The common methods to prevent inorganic scales are pH adjustment by acids and addition of antiscalants. The objectives of this paper were to evaluate CaCO3 scale formation and to control of CaCO3 scale using antiscalants and to investigate factors affecting in scale formation in SWRO condition. Stiff and Davis Index calculation and several laboratory experiments were used to evaluate CaCO3 scale formation. The inorganic scale was not avoidable fouling if any anti-scaling measures were not applied. The formation potential of inorganic scale fouling was quite great under the examined conditions, which was confirmed by the laboratory experimental results. The flux of RO decreased substantially under the scale formation conditions. The CaCO3 scale was inhibited by addition of antiscalants i.e,. SHMP, Spectra Guard, and Flocon 150N regardless of concentration factor. However each antiscalant showed the different inhibition time and optinum doses. Several factors affecting the scale foramtion were examined with two feed waters and four types of membranes having distinctive surface properties such as roughness and charge. The amount of deposited scales on the membranes were increased in all membranes but the degree of deposition on each membrane was different. The use of filter prior to the system showed the different amount of scale deposition. The XRD spectra and SEM image revealed that there were inorganic scale formation on all cases even with antiscalant dosing and prefilter. In general, a membrane with greater roughness and negative surface charge appeared to form more scales. This implied that membrane surface characteristics such as roughness and surface charge affected inorganic fouling presumably by providing favourable sites to precipitation and enhancing attraction of species to the membrane surface. Outcomes of this research will help to enhance RO membrane performance and to extend the use of reverse osmosis membranes on various fields including industrial recycling and wastewater reuse.
