South Korea's grain self-sufficiency rate was 27.8 percent in 2008, especially the rate was low as 13.6 percent and 0.8 percent in case of beans and corns, respectively. On the other hand, the world's consumption of grain is continuously increased and hence, the grain price is rising. This resulted that the increasing of GMO farmland area and it is hard to secure us as the Non-GMO farmland. Korean government started to import eatable GMO since May 2008 to secure the grain supply in South Korea. After that, Korean consumers are concerning about the GMO as its security to human body and environment are open to dispute yet. This research was conducted to understand consumer's perception of GMOs' benefits and dangers, and to investigate consumers' purchase intention on GMO. For this purpose, 500 adult consumers over 20 was surveyed via online questionaire in September, 2010. FGI also conducted to examine how consumers perceive the benefits and dangers of GM Foods. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS and descriptive analysis, Factor analysis, ANOVA and Regression analysis were utilized. The result of this paper was summarized as follows: First, the score of consumer's recognition of the profitable side of GMO was 4.37 out of 7. This revealed only little positivity on GMO. But consumers were more positive for the GMO which contains some functional property, such as anticancer, insulin or nutritive components. Organically raised GMO were recognized safer than non-organic farm products because it didn't use agricultural chemicals. Second, consumer's perception of the danger of GMO was devided into 3 elements. 'Fear of harm', 'uncontrollability' and 'not known well'. The 'fear of harm' scored 4.85 out of 7, higher than that of 'not known well'(3.92) and 'uncontrollability'(3.41). Third, only 6.6 percent of consumers answered that they would never purchase GMO, however, it was about 56.6 percent if the answer 'Try not to buy' was included as negative side. On the other hand, consumers tended to comparatively positive on purchasing some GMO which had special functional property. Fourth, the benefit perception and low level of 'not known well' positively influenced on purchase intention of GMO, while 'fear of harm' and 'uncontrollability' influenced negatively. On the willingness to pay to GMO, 'the fear of harm' and 'uncontrollability' influenced negatively. Based on the results above, conclusions and suggestions were proposed. First, consumers were found to perceive the benefits and dangers of GMO at the same time. Then the negative perception dominated consumers' purchase intention on GMO. So, to let consumers make a rational purchase decision by themselves, it is necessary to provide consumers balanced and detailed information about GMO. Second, it is required to change the direction of developing GMO from increasing productivity to fulfill the consumers needs such as adding nutritive components or organically raising crops.
