For the value-added utilization of the under-utilized seaweeds or by-products obtained from seaweeds processing, the applicability of the resources obtained from seaweeds, i.e., alginate and seaweed powders were tested for preparation of bio-degradable films. Firstly, sodium alginate was used for the preparation of bio-degradable films and their properties were modified using two different methods of CaCls treatment, i.e, the direct addition of CaC1₂ into film making solution (mixing films) and the immersion of alginate films into CaC1₂ solutions (immersion films). Their treatment effects on tensile strength (TS), percentage elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS) of the films were investigated TS and E of the mixing films were not changed considerably, but those of the immersion films changed considerably with significant (P<0.05) increase in TS and decrease in E. WVP of the immersion films decreased significantly (P<0.05), but that of the mixing films did not decreased Water resistance measured by WS was not improved with the mixing films, but the alginate films became water resistant when they treated by immersing in higher than 2% CaC1₂ solutions. Water adsorption by the films also decreased in the immersion films, Swelling ratio (SR) of the immersion film decreased linearly with temperature without affecting WS of the films. Secondly, seaweed powders were used to prepared seaweed-based bio-degradable films, Two different CaC1₂ treatment methods, i.e., the ’mixing method’ and ’immersion method’ were tested for the preparation of bio-degradable films using powders of various marine algae such as different parts of sea mustard (Undaria pinnatifidri) (leaf, stem, and sphorophyll), sweet tanlge (Laminaria japcniod), and fusiforme (Hizikia fusiforme) extracting alginate by the acid-alkali extraction method. Except fusiforme powder, all the marine algae powders tested were made flexible free-standing films by both methods, Except water solubility (WS), the surface color, tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), and water vapor permeability (WVP) were not show any distinctive difference between the CaC1₂ treatment methods. Though general properties of the marine algae powder films such as TS, water vapor permeability WVP, and WS were inferior to those of alginate films, they indicated a potential in application for a new source of bio-degradable packaging materials.
