(A) Study on the Effects of Phonics in Adult English Learning in the EFL setting : The Seesaw of Phonics and Balanced Literature Instruction원문보기

abstract Many adults feel the dire need to reach a certain level of proficiency in language due to frequent business trips, use of the Internet to search information, for the global entrepreneurship, for many academic interactions, and so on. But many give up due to some difficulties. One of the reason may be that some think they are too old to learn English or it is too hard to continue learning. However, some researchers found that adults have been shown to be superior learners. At least several planes-literacy, vocabulary, pragmatics, schematic knowledge, and even syntax-adults(Scovel, Thomas 1999). This indicates that adults have the ability to learn English as superior learners. The study, followed about 400 children, conducted by Ingvar Lundberg, Jorgen Frost and Ole-Peter Peterson(1988) found that poor decoding skills of unsuccessful readers is related to low phonemic awareness. Successful readers seem to develop phonemic awareness at the same time as they develop word- recognition skills, while children who fail to learn to read don't. Similarly, the reason of Korean adults' failure in learning English may be that adults didn't have master phonemic awareness. Therefore, this thesis examined that phonemic awareness should be for adults and as a method for teaching phonemic awareness which method would motivate the students to learn English with interest and pleasure, Phonics Instruction(PI) or the Balanced Literacy Instruction(BLI). The procedure conducted was of a group of five adult learners who were surveyed with regard to their perceptions on the effectiveness of each method (PI and BLI) after each 3 hour, 12 sessions of intensive instruction. The survey results suggest that phonemic awareness should be for adults in learning a foreign language and BLI is helpful for adult learners continue learning with interest and pleasure and more practical method than PI in reading and writing skills. For these, Chapter I states the problems and purposes of the study. Chapter Ⅱ analyzes the background of the thesis and discusses if there is a critical period for adults in learning a foreign language. It also includes phonemic awareness, the definition and the origin of PI, WLA, and BLI. Chapter Ⅲ introduces the hypothesis, methods, the research population and materials. Chapter Ⅳ derives the concluding remarks after summing up the results of this study. key word: adult English, a critical period, phonemic awareness, the phonics instruction, the whole language approach, the balanced literacy instruction Table of Contents
