ABSTRACT The investigation on 'love(Caritas)' from St. Augustine's point of view in relationship between God and people - focused on 「Tractates on the First Epistle of John」 Kim, Dong-Young Dept, of Theological Graduate School Incheon Catholic University St. Augustine (354-430) reflected on the true faith of Christians and the origin of its joy and happiness, profoundly contemplating God and man. The thesis aimed at studying what is Caritas in the relationship between man and God that the saint experienced and understood, and for this, the thesis found in caritas the organic relationship between man's love toward God (eros) and God's love toward man (agape). The comprehensive meaning of caritas is God's love for man and man's response to it. It means man's love toward God and at the same time love toward others, that is, love toward neighbors. This thesis defines it as 'fraternity (caritas fraterna)' as expressed in The First Epistle of John. This 'caritas fraterna' is the indescribable gift from God because God's love for man is given first. Also, caritas is prior to all human behaviors because God's love is unconditional. After all, the saint's caritas means love yielding himself to others and sharing joy and sorrow about others' lives. It is based on the love of Christ who represents man ultimately and yields himself to others, trying hard for man. The first chapter studies the background of the concept of saint's love. Here are two elements. One is Gnosticismus eros spread under the influence of Greek philosophy, and the other is Marcionismus agape. These two loves are the elements of both eros and agape. However, the influence of these loves showed extreme features where eros was only eros and agape was only agape. Concerning this, St. Augustine understood the duality of love as eros and agape and developed this concept comprehensively, escaping the danger of extreme elements. In particular, the saint accepted the nature of eros as the ascending element to miss and yearn for God, and emphasized the initiative of God's agape through his theory of Grace. After all, St. Augustine emphasized that man's love for God begins when God visits and meets us directly, when caritas begins. The second chapter deals with the essential nature of St. Augustine's caritas. Here the saint expressed the soul's orientation to return to God as 'amor Dei' or 'caritas' The most important thing in such concept of St. Augustine's caritas was the fact that the fulfillment of love the man tries to fulfil ultimately comes from God, not from this world. On the basis of this, the object and direction of the concept of St. Augustine's caritas can be set up. To love the world and the self is not the correct object and direction, so the correct object becomes God and the saint had to pursue love for God. For this, the saint examined the concept frui and uti. Frui means possessing the object that man loves and feels joy from that. So to the saint, frui is an essential prerequisite in love and frui can be understood as the fruit of fulfilled love. Now, St. Augustine examined the nature of love through the concept of ordo amoris. This means that there is an order of the class between all existences in the world, God loves incomparably, man loves as much as man himself, and man uses rather than loves other creatures except man. Also, St. Augustine emphasized keeping the same purpose of love toward God and stressed the love for neighbors and the self in the order of love. The third chapter deals with the saint's love, that is, fraternity, shown in he First Epistle of John. Caritas infusa is love itself, Holy Spirit the 'God's gift(donum Dei)'. Through this God's love stays in us, and also by this Holy Spirit, the tendency to yearn for God and to be one with God is engraved in our soul. Holy Spirit the God as the gift to pour into man becomes the origin of power that man can fulfil love and leads man. This Caritas works in man and appears as fraternity. Along with this, the mediator Jesus Christ is between God and man, so Christ plays the role of the bridge between "man's love toward God" and "God's love toward man." Thereby, God reveals Caritas in man's love. After all, the saint saw Christ as the object of love and the presence of Christ in the neighbor. In Christus the saint discovered God's love and love for neighbors. Caritas that St. Augustine says is originated from God's gift, which means Christ's love of agape. This love was poured into man's heart, the love that God poured stays in man, and the love again appears as eros love which moves toward God. The impetus that the love as a gift from God can go toward God again was in Christus. To put fraternity into practice means love for neighbors, which becomes to practice eros love and at the same time becomes the behavior to love Christ who stays in man. After all, the love in the true Christ becomes the face of Christ and for us it becomes calling to love brothers and sisters in God's plan, the truth.
