A study on the combustion expansion between floors in multistory building by fire simulation Park Deuk-Jin Department of Fire Administration Graduate School of Dongshin National University (Directed by Professor, Baek Eun-Sun) (abstract) Modern society is progressing rapidly urbanization with the development of civilization, industralization and acceleration of Information Communication for leading necessary labor force and cultural life. This situation, accordingly, leads to concentration of population toward cities and advances in facilities of transportation, which results in increasing land value and induces big and multistory building. It corresponds to the efficient utilization of a country, commercialization, and symbolic power of city. And this trend is expected to be more active in the future. But multistory building has many difficulties in assuring evacuation or security of people in fire on account of fireproof construction and fire protection construction that is inherent in multistory building. The stack effect, in particular, is being raised as the greatest problem. The reason why it matters is that it cannot control or emit heat and smoke easily in fire because of its airtight construction. And it is occurred by density difference derived from divergent temperature between inside and outside, which spreads flame and smoke rapidly to vertical and horizontal way through fast air stream and threats a man's life ultimately. This stack effect is influenced primarily by pressure difference of construct caused by temperature difference between inside and outside. It, besides, is affected by various factors, including a natural factor such as outer wind, a architectural factor such as an airtightness of construct, an adequacy of interior division, a core arrangement of building, an appropriateness of crack closing between floors or windows and doors, a setup of stairs, a flat form, and an equipment factor such as a mutual-assistance system and a smoke-controlling system. From these aspects, measures preventing fire from stack effect can be divided into a few categories. First, it can be prevented by airtighting outer cover of construct, which is a natural measure coming from natural factor. Second, it can be stopped by limiting indoor air flow, which can be included into an architectural one. Third, there is an another method in relation to equipment, including an application of fire protection system adequate for building structure and a capacity-centric design. The most fundamental way, among these, is to prepare fireproof system or to prevent combustion expansion between floors, that is so called Passive System which is able to control and limit fire by natural force. For this reason, this study, first, analyses the condition of combustion expansion at indoor or between floors if a fire occurs in multistory building by PyroSim program based on FDS which is fire simulation program, the flow of smoke through crack between windows and doors, the character of combustibles formed by fire. And this study finds out problems derived from combustion expansion between floors and proposes the way for solving them. For this purpose, this study carries out fire simulation based on a story originating fire, 3-story and 20-story building and analyses the temperature dispersion per hour, the concentration of CO2 or O2 each story and the diffusion of smoke each story with closed doors and opened crack between floors. And it analyses HRR, a smoke density, a heat sensor, and an operating time of sprinkler per hour. This study, in addition, reviews the state of vertical and horizontal flow of heat and smoke through crack between dual outer cover spaces and analyses empirically the descending figure of smoke from the top floor. In short, this study analyses the stack effect and the combustion expansion between floors in multistory building by fire simulation focused on the flow of heat and smoke using PyroSim and finds out problems. As a result, the way for solving problems according to this study is as follows. The findings are expected to make full use of as a fire protection guideline in the future. 1. the definition of multistory building 2. the stack effect based on the structure of multistory building 3. the fire simulation based on the structure of multistory building 4. the analysis and examination of the flow of temperature and smoke through the combustion expansion between floors in multistory building 5. the way for preventing the combustion expansion between floors in multistory building key word : multistory building, the stack effect, fire simulation, dual outer cover structure
