Make-up started from the natural desire to express the beauty but came to have a role as an instrument to represent the cultural pattern of a society in the historical progression that human beings construct, maintain and expand the society. In general, the change of the culture is caused by the internal factors and the external factors. The internal factors are those that cause the cultural change inside the culture including the inventions and the discoveries. Meanwhile, the external factors are those that receive the influence of other societies' culture through the cultural dispersion or interchange. The culture is a complex product formed not only by the indigenous characteristics of the people but also the incessant interaction in politics, economy and society with surrounding countries and natural environments. Goryeo, who reunified Korean peninsular under the leadership of Wanggeon in the end of Silla, not only had the Medieval characteristics but also played a role as a bridge between Ancient and Modern Ages. Focusing on Goryeo Age that lies in the connective position of Korean make-up culture, this paper reviews the contemporary social and cultural backgrounds and the interchange with surrounding countries who influenced Goryeo to clarify the characteristic make-ups of the age. To clarify the characteristic make-ups of Goryeo women, this study searched for the significance and the role of ginyeo (entertaining girl) who had much influence on the social status of Goryeo women and their make-up. Furthermore, it also surveyed the diplomatic relation with Song and Yuan Dynasties who were adjacent to Goryeo geographically and had political, economical and social interactions incessantly with each other and the make-up characteristics of each country's women. In the main part, the make-ups and their meanings recorded in , and were analyzed to show the make-up characteristics of Goryeo women. And to clarify the documentary contents more concretely, the figures of women in tomb paintings, Buddhist paintings and portraits of Goryeo Age were analyzed and the features of their make-up were drawn out. By comparing the make-ups of women described in the artifacts of Song and Yuan Ages with those of Goryeo Age, it was analyzed how the former make-up of Goryeo women was changed through the imported cultures along with the changing process of make-up since then. In Goryeo Age, the bundae(powdered face and drawn eyebrows) make-up was first introduced by ginyeos. They whitened their face with powder, arranged their brows thinly and colored their lips in red with yeonji. So, there came some words like bundae and yayong meaning heavy make-up in several documents. Yet, the pattern and the length of eyebrows as well as the lips yeonji were fairly influenced by Song and Yuan who had a close relation with Goryeo. The study on the make-up of Goryeo women will be helpful in researching the make-up culture of each age through the continuous studies and reinterpretations of Korean traditional make-up culture by newly clarifying the characteristics of Goryeo make-up culture.
