The effects of participation in an art therapy program on the depression and happiness of the elderly at a nursing facility원문보기

The purposes of this study were to apply an art therapy program for happiness to the elderly at a nursing facility and to investigate its effects and impacts on their depression and happiness. The theoretical background of the study was the 12 happiness programs of Lyubomirsky according to his "How to Be Happy" principle, and it was applied to art therapy. The research period spanned from September 19 to December 12, 2009. The investigator explained the objectives and purposes of the study to the subject group of the elderly the day before the art therapy program was initiated, only picked those who provided a consent to the study, and divided them into the experiment and control group. Then the Harvard Happiness Questionnaire was administered in the pre- and post-test. Since most of the subjects lacked vision and understanding, the investigator and research assistant explained the research goals and the meanings of the items to them in an individual interview. The art therapy program was applied for 50 minutes a week over total 12 sessions during the research period. The subjects' happiness was measured with the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire(OHQ), which contains items about self-esteem, goal awareness, social interest, humor, and other well-being elements and accordingly is useful for assessing happiness among individuals across all the age groups. The subjects' depression was measured with the Korean Form of Geriatric Depression Scale(KGDS) standardized by Jeong In-gwa et al.(1997). Then the Mann-Whitney U test was conducted according to each factor of depression and happiness in order to pre- and post-test the experiment and control group for homogeneity. In addition, the Wilcoxon signed rank test was carried out in a nonparametric manner to examine the pre-post effects of the two groups and to test the two groups' statistical significance in the subareas. The research findings about the effects on the elderly's depression and happiness were as follows: First, the experiment group decreased in depression and increased in happiness after the application of the art therapy program, which indicates that art therapy influenced the elderly at the nursing facility; second, there were differences in such happiness factors as self-esteem, goal awareness, social interest, and humor between the experiment and control group according to the post-test results, which suggests that participation in art therapy had positive impacts on the experiment group. Those findings indicate that art therapy is a creative method to help the elderly at a nursing facility decrease depression and increase happiness and has its efficacy. The 12 happiness programs by Lyubomirsky were applied to the art therapy and turned out to be effective in increasing happiness for those who were in deep despair. Thus they will help the happiness strategy settle down as a habit through long-term practice. In short, an art therapy program for happiness has more improved and sustainable well-being effects and enough usability as an area of treatment for a happy life in old age and a stable life at a nursing facility.
