Objective:
Public interest on health is on the rise as the economy improves and the average life expectancy increases. The recent emerge of the concept of CAM(Complementary and Alternative Medicine) and integrative medicine is due to these situations.
But the terms ‘CAM’ and ‘integrative medicine’ often lead to confusion. This is because both CAM and integrative medicine are concepts derived from their relation to conventional medicine. The perspective on CAM and integrative medicine is determined by how you set up the relationship between CAM and conventional medicine. In Korea, a more careful configuration is necessary, as both biomedicine and Korean Medicine are recognized as conventional medicine.
This paper will look into the definitions of CAM and integrative medicine, the background in which these concepts were formed, and review related studies.
Methods:
In this paper, we researched the concept of CAM through the change in the terminology and definition of CAM throughout history.
Furthermore, the definition, concept, and research methods used to explain integrative medicine have been inquired into. Also, the differences between the researches on integrative medicine and those on CAM have been studied.
Moreover, domestic researches regarding integrative medicine have been analyzed.
Results:
The recognition of CAM by existing medical circles has been fairly exclusive. But as scientific researches to ensure evidence for CAM are being actively conducted and showing progress, the perception of CAM is becoming more favorable. This is reflected in the fact that the term indicating CAM changed from alternative medicine, complementary medicine to CAM and the definition of CAM became more cooperative.
Although modern medical verification of CAM showed some results in its way, controversies on whether this type of research can express the value of CAM itself continue. The term integrative medicine newly emerged for this reason. The rise of a new term comes from limitations caused by forcing existing research methodologies on CAM. If you apply methods such as RCT(Randomized Controlled Trial) or SR(Systematic Review) as it is to CAM, the original values of CAM may become degraded.
The concept of integrative medicine emphasizes honoring the philosophical backgrounds of each medical system while applying CAM. This does not mean neglecting scientific verifications, just that efforts to maintain the characteristics of each medical system should be put in while designing verification methods.
Conclusion:
The terms CAM and integrative medicine are becoming used more commonly, but their meaning is unclear among researchers. Especially in Korea, the background in which the concepts CAM and integrative medicine arose is not being properly discussed. Because of this, differences in terminology interpretations exist among researchers. Thus, in future research of CAM and integrative medicine, rather than just focusing on application only, debates on the meaning of these concepts, their philosophical background, and research methodology are necessary. When backed with these discussions, a true medicine for patients will can be achieved.
