This study was conducted to suggest basic data which can be utilized for Korean long-distance speed skaters enhancing performance, breaking old records, as well as better training programs for them. To this end, the relationship between speed skaters' characteristics in terms of physical development and their performance was examined at multiple levels based on the analysis of outstanding Korean speed skaters' aerobic and anaerobic capacity at various levels. This study was conducted on twenty male speed skaters who are registered on KSU and participating in competitions. Ten out of them were categorized as "outstanding skaters"(ranked 1st to 12th) and the other ten were categorized as "non-outstanding skaters"(ranked 13th to 24th) according to 2009-2010 season's 5,000M ranking. To examine the skaters' aerobic capacity, treadmills (Quinton Model-4500, Oxycon-pro(Germany), and 12 lead EKG) were used. For anaerobic capacity, Wingate was used. The results are as following. 1. In an aerobic capacity test, the outstanding skater group's maximum oxygen consumption was measured at 65.33±3.17watt, significantly higher than 60.11±5.85watt of the non-outstanding skater group.(p>.05) Emax of the outstanding group was 150.70±19.23watt, significantly higher than non-outstanding group's 122.90±14.07watt.(p>.01) The outstanding group's maximum heart rate was 195.50±7.63watt, significantly higher than the other group's 181.70±16.62watt.(p>.05) Finally, the outstanding group's RER, 1.0540±.03062watt, was also significantly higher than the other group's 1.0880±.03584watt.(p>.05) 2. In an anaerobic capacity test, the outstanding skater group's maximum power was measured at 1485.36±300.13watt, significantly higher than the non-outstanding group's 1097±191watt.(p>.01) The outstanding group's maximum power per weight was 18.75±3.02watt, not significantly higher or lower than the other group's 17.82±1.65watt. There was also no significant difference between the mean power of the outstanding group and the other group, 277.40±48.76watt and 237.37±59.52watt respectively. Mean power per weight of the two groups had little difference as well, measured at 3.73±.770watt and 3.81±.496watt respectively. The outstanding group's average power was 751.55±76.46watt, significantly higher than the other group's 560.37±87.46watt.(p>.01) However, there was no significant difference between average power per weight of the two groups, measured at 9.23±.801watt and 9.09±.419watt respectively. Finally, the outstanding group's AT was 48.3±5.3ml/kg/min, significantly higher than the other group's t44.2±4.5ml/kg/min.(p<.01) According to the results, there was difference between outstanding group and non-outstanding group of long-distance speed skaters' aerobic capacity and anaerobic capacity. Therefore, to enhance the skaters' performance in the long-distance race of speed skating, a systematic training program which can improve their performance based on the combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercise is necessary.
