The purpose of this research is to overview the characteristics of Chinese Musicals by analyzing producing process and style of Butterflies(2007) in attempt to attribute to future development of the genre. Chinese Musicals put emphasis on delivering Chinese contents and fashion as well as referring to Broadway musicals' producing style. Butterflies is one of the representative pieces of Chinese Musicals, and would be the main concern of the research. Butterflies was created by producer Li Dun, musician San Bao, and writer Guan San in collaboration with the french musical Notre Dame de Paris producing team's producer, lighting designer and choreographer in effort to achieve both technical specialty and popularity. This work integrates Chinese cultural legacy with Western musical genre, which is quite an unfamiliar fusion. Butterflies has attributed to the genre in the sense that it adopted innovative producing style and fashion displaying their effect and potential problems, which would be a clue to future Chinese Musicals. Butterflies is based on Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Ying Tai, the famous Chinese traditional story, newly recreated to fit modern musical genre. In attempt to balancing out between Chinese original sensitivities and modern musical characteristics, the outstanding factors are as follows: First, in terms of contents, Butterflies adopted the original story by maintaining the key points and adding bold recreation at the same time, raising dramatic tension. All the characters are “Butterflyman”, either human being or butterfly, and some additional characters heighten the conflict, criticizing the irrationality of modern society. The couple's choosing death in resisting to the suppression of marriage system and reincarnating as butterflies shows love conquers tragic reality. This symbolizes the absolute freedom, liberation from all suppression. Second, San Bao composed twenty-one pieces of original music for Butterflies, and those were played by the symphony orchestra, traditional and electronic bands. Also, the violin concerto Liang Zhu, composed in 1958 integrating Chinese traditional play music with symphonic features, well expresses the inner emotional flow of heroine “Zhu Ying Tai”. Third, the choreography was designed by English choreographer Darren Charles, varying among modern dance, Latin dance and Ballet, in perfect harmony with the storyline and the music. Fourth, all dialogues in the musical uses recitative. This was a radical trial to reflect the rhythmic features of modern Chinese and lyric nuance. However, it diminished the aural effect, conventionality and entertaining function of the genre by making the whole work too serious and gloomy. Also, high technologic stage equipments raised the visual and auditory effect of dramatic development, and the costume and makeup obviously represented the characteristic and personality each character's. Butterflies is the first innovation in the Chinese musical genre. It discovered artistic contents out of genuine Chinese culture rather than bare imitation of Western culture, as well as newly recreating it by adopting the advanced foreign technology. Butterflies is a successful model for future artistic creation and managing the market of the Chinese Musical genre. In sustaining the success of Butterflies, the industry should focus on developing powerful contents and training professional actors and producers.
