The Juuicho is traditional multicolored paintwork pattern on the wooden pillar and it prevented dirt by putting silk on the pillar and was originated from magnificent fabric decoration and this can be found in many Korea, China and Japan's ancient tomb mural, cave temples, handicrafts, stone map, and paintings. The fabric decoration was effectively used to express magnificence of a Buddhist temple and dignity of precious statue by decorating pillars and roof with silk cloth like a curtain or putting the cloths in layers with beads. However, due to the fatal fire problems of wooden building and hassle of laundry and maintenance, the Juuicho was introduced as a continuous, effective and cost-effective ways to maintain the wooden building; which is to directly color traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden building.
When examining the characteristics of Juuicho on 365 traditional wooden buildings such as temple, palace, Confucian school, memorial hall, watch tower and private houses, we could tell that the Juiicho was only done by straight lines and we were able to disguise them into four kinds; Upper Juui and straight lines, straight lines and lower Juui, upper Juui and straight lines and lower Juui.
There were varieties of Juuicho on the Buddhist temple so we've distinguished the buildings into three kinds; main temple, sub temple and annexation temple. When we examined the characteristics of Juuicho, the main and sub temples had many upper Juuicho, straight lines and lower Juuicho and there were many lower Juuicho, which were configured by the fabric. The Buddhist temple is the most important area of the temple and had more upper Juuicho, straight lines and lower Juuicho than other temples and it can be more magnificence when it is colorfully and elegantly decorated with cloth.
The tree and flower patterns were used frequently as a main pattern and followed by semicircles but the lotus flower, which was used a lot on other material buildings, wasn't used so much. Mostly, the temples in Inam, Cheongcheong, which were established in the middle Joseon, used the pattern of lotus flower.
The form of cloth can be distinguished into Takeui, Deurim, Hwichang and Chijeon and Takeui and Deurim was used more widely. The Takeui can be divided into three kinds; colorful strips of cloth for trimming hidden under a straight line, colorful strips of cloth for trimming on top of straight lines, or the entire colorful strip is done by a thread. All three kinds of Takeui was used throughout the entire time, especially, it was often used in Gyeongsang area. In the earlier Joseon period, the Deurim had point on the middle like a lotus flower but had piece of silk coming down in a consistent width. North Korea used more Deurim, than Takeui, and it had gold letter on the lower Juui. When more than 2 cloths were used, it was combination of Takeui and Deurim. Hwichang and Chijeon were only used in South Korea.
The Buddhist temple, which is the home of Buddha who touched the pain of rebirth, was a beautiful and soft space where you can imagine the supreme happiness of the world so it had to be decorated colorfully with fabric and Juuicho. However, the palace, the King's house, had some traditional multicolored paintwork on main building and had no Juuicho on the pillar or had black steel band. We weren't able to see the palace prior to the 17th century but the Confucian of Joseon Dynasty were affected on palace's traditional multicolored paintwork and it was to symbolize the King's authority and magnificent, who should be distinguished from the normal people. It was effective to represent the plain and restrained King's authority rather than the fancy Buddhist temple.
Like the palace, some buildings such as confusion temple and school, memorial hall, ancestral rites, government offices, watch tower and private homes, had straight line or simple Juuicho but Juuicho wasn't used in various forms like a temple.
Through 'a study of traditional architecture Juuicho', we've discovered the fabric decoration, which wraps around the pillar, is the origin of the Juuicho and in order to find out how the fabric decoration changed and how Juuicho have introduced by examining the architectures. On top of the fabric, which prevents the dirt, they've added Yeongrak or Deurim to add more decoration and magnificent element and Juuicho's fabric pattern on the wooden structure.
There were many studies done regarding traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden building such as origin, type, color and pattern but there was no study done regarding the origin and changes of Juuicho. As this study only focused on Juuicho, it is more meaningful but a study on traditional architecture Juuicho will be great help on future studies on traditional multicolored paintwork on other material.
