It`s been generally believed that music has even more effect on human emotion that any other thing does. Therefore, a number of musicologists, philosophers and scientists tried hard to determine the relationship between music and emotion. They were deeply interested in emotional responses that might be arisen in relation to musical elements such as melody, tonality, rhythm, harmony, tone color, beat and tempo. In association, especially, they conducted lots of researches that focused on post-medieval church modes and minor and major scale. The purpose of this study was to inverstigate the relationship between music and emotion, especially in terms of mode and tonality. For the purpose, I considered theories regarding the relationship that had been discussed by other researches and examined how that relationship was actually reflected in musical pieces. Finding of the study can be summarized as follows. First, it was the Baroque Age when the relationship between music and human emotion began to be as a part of scientific research. Second, different modes correspond to different emotions. This suggests that only if the audience listen to music, they may notice not only its mode, but also emotion implied in it without information from the composer. Third, composers have their respective preferred tonality. Tonality is in emotional in nature. Fourth, composers believe that a particular emotion can be best expressed by a particular musical instrument and scale. And fifth, emotions arisen by the words and scale of a musical piece are similar to each other in nature. The theories regarding the relationship between music and emotion and musical pieces in which relationship is implied, which were considered or examined by this researcher, suggest that given a same thing, people are not different from each other in emotional arousal or emotional response. To determine the relationship between music and emotion will ultimately make evident the very value of music itself, the researcher thinks. Finally, this study had some limitation because it focused on the relationship bewteen emotion and a particular element of music, or scale. So, the researcher hopes that subsequent researches are made about the relationship between other elements of music than scale and human emotion.
