An Analysis on the Process of Students' Conceptual Understanding in the Concept-Centered Teaching of Division with Decimals원문보기

The teaching of division with decimals in the current elementary school is of algorithm based education excluding concepts of decimals and meanings of division. Thus, the course is not fully reflecting various concepts of decimals and meanings of division as partitive division and measurement division. Therefore, it results in many errors and frequent confuse between algorithms. This improper teaching method hinders conceptual understanding of real numbers in middle school and high school and attaining goals of enhancing mathematical thinking in the seventh mathematics curriculum and 2007 revised mathematic curriculum. This study aims to develop the concept-centered teaching program for division with decimals based on concepts of decimals and meanings of the division, to analyze the process of students' conceptual understanding on division with decimals during instructions, and to suggest implications to the teaching of division with decimals in elementary schools. In order to achieve the purposes of this study, following research questions were established. First, to develop the concept-centered teaching program based on concepts of decimals and meanings of division according to the fundamental directions obtained by analyzing the teaching methods of division with decimals and precedent studies of nations. Second, to apply the developed teaching program and to analyze the achievement test results. Third, to analyze the process of students' conceptual understanding on division with decimals during instructions. First of all, this study conducted a theoretical review about concepts of decimals and meanings of division with decimals and teaching methods of division with decimals in Korea, America, Japan and Singapore. According to the findings of theoretical review, the concept-centered teaching program for division with decimals of this study was developed. This program emphasized on essential concepts of decimals such as measured number, decimal notation, operator, fraction and ratio and on meanings of division as measurement division and partitive division. It also underlined using physical materials such as marked ruler, pieces of strip, place value bars, operational number line and schema of proportion. The program was supplemented through the preliminary experiment. The subjects of the study were fifth grade students attending B elementary school in Gyeonggi province(one high level, three mid-level, and one low level in mathematics achievement). Eight lessons of multiplication with decimals were conducted as the precedent learning necessary for the lessons in the program. Data collected included videotapes of classes, the activity sheets and achievement test results of the subjects. The results of pre and post achievement test were compared and analyzed. Based on the framework for concepts of division with decimals developed by the theoretical review, students’ conceptual understanding on division with decimals was analyzed on the basis of students' solving processes of problems in mathematic journal developed in the study and students' activity sheets made during the lessons. According to analysis, most of the subjects were able to recognize measurement division or partitive division in problem situations related division with decimals. They were also able to write the proper expressions for division with decimals and operate in various methods with relevance to concepts of decimals and meanings of division. Especially, if the divisor was decimal, they were able to connect their methods to the algorithm of division with decimals by utilizing the ratio-equivalence relation. However, low level student showed difficulties in explaining with relevance to the algorithm procedure or writing expressions, in despite of already understanding the concept by activities using physical materials. Comparing the results of pre-and post test, the subjects showed their better understanding on measured number, decimal fraction, decimal notation. Especially, understanding on measured number has enhanced greatly. Analyzing the test results related to the meanings of division using problem solving and problem posing, three of the subjects were able to understand the meanings of division in problem situation and solve them, but mid-low level and low level student have confused partitive division and measurement division or showed errors in writing expressions. Also, all five were able to pose problems for partitive division and measurement division under certain condition but they had hard time with partitive division which divisor was decimal. It was hard for them to pose problems using external ratio. Finally, analysing the test results on understanding algorithms and operation principles, four students all understood the procedure of algorithm. And they were able to justify the division with decimals based on the linearity which is embedded on ratio or operator. And they were also able to justify the properties of division. But low level student was not able to explain the algorithm of expressions that includes ‘0’ with decimal quotient. The following conclusions were drawn from research results. First, introducing students to the variety of real life problems that can be solved by division with decimals before applying the algorithm help much in enhancing understanding the meaning of the division of decimal. Extracting the situations related to the division with decimals in the variety of problem situation with application of decimal fraction’s four fundamental arithmetic operations and classifying them to the partitive division and measurement division situation again give students opportunities to recognize the meaning of division of decimals. Second, constructing the separate session divided by partitive division and measurement division situation under the same learning attainment goals help students enhance the conceptual understanding on division with decimals. Especially, it is seen that the approach of problem situations of measurement division’s (decimal fraction)÷(natural number) and partitive division (natural number)÷(decimal fraction), (decimal fraction)÷(decimal fraction) that have not been approached by the current curriculum has helped them to understand the meaning of operation and decimal fraction as the ‘ratio’ and ‘operator’. Third, the teaching method of operating in decimal fraction based on the meanings of division without transforming them into the fraction was helpful in recognizing the various aspects of decimals such as measured number, decimal notation, ratio, and operator. Especially in finding many number pairs with ratio-equivalence relation and inventing algorithms in the case of the dividend being decimal, students have enhanced their understanding of concepts of decimals as the ‘ratio’ and ‘operator’. Four, estimating quotient without precise computing after writing expressions proper to the problem situation decreases the errors with decimal points. Fifth, use of the variety of physical materials such as operational number line, ruler, pieces of strip, place value bars was very effective in understanding concepts of division with decimals. It was able to find the effective physical material proper to each lesson and student level. Therefore, it is recommended to select and utilize physical materials for teaching division with decimals appropriate to the subject matter of the each lesson and student level. Sixth, it takes long time for low level student to understand meanings of division with decimals and to write expressions or to explain the algorithm procedure even if he has already understood the meaning of division by physical operation activity. Sufficient repeated teaching and practice of computation is needed. Key words : decimals, division with decimals, partitive division, measurement division
