The purpose of this study was to investigate general disposition of rough-and-tumble play of outdoor play focusing on kindergarten outdoor play, to examine the relationship of the outdoor rough-and-tumble play of preschoolers in kindergarten to their sociability in an effort to provide some information on how to support their rough-and-tumble play in the right way. The subjects in this study were 28 preschoolers in a class of Western age 4 in a kindergarten selected from the kindergartens attached to A elementary school in the city of Incheon. The selected kindergarten was equipped with outdoor play facilities, and it was easy to observe the young children during rough-and-tumble play since the outdoor play facilities were built on the sandy ground. As Humphreys & Smith (1987)'s inventory was universally used in lots of earlier studies to observe young children's behavior during rough-and-tumble play (Lee Sook-jae, 1998; Lee Sa-ja & Lim Myung-hee, 1998), Kim Young-ah(2007)'s observation inventory that selected observation categories based on that instrument was utilized in this study without any modifications. To compare the social development of the preschoolers, Jeon Hye-jin(2008)'s test was used, which was a modified version of Jo Sung-ja(2003)'s test that employed a five-point scale. As for data analysis, descriptive statistical data were obtained to find out their general disposition about rough-and- tumble play, and chi-square was carried out to see if gender made any differences to their general disposition. And Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were calculated to look for connections between rough-and-tumble play and sociability. The findings of the study were as follows: First, regarding their disposition about rough-and-tumble play, children enjoyed most frequently runaway and catch. and other rough-and-tumble play was showed relatively low frequency. Both of the preschool boys and girls preferred the kind of play that wasn't aggressive. Second, there were a significant sex difference in rough-and-tumble play categories during the outdoor play. and boys were participated in rough-and-tumble play than girls. also both of the preschool boys and girls are to the exclusion of favorite 'runaway and catch' behavior, girls were participated in 'catch' behavior than boys. boys occurs high frequency than girls in rough-and-tumble play categories other than catch behavior. Specially, boys occurs high frequency in rough-and-tumble play categories(i.e., runaway and cath, sham swing arms, push and pull, hit and kick) than girls. Third, concerning the correlation of rough-and-tumble play to sociability, rough-and-tumble play had a positive correlation to autonomy, leadership, sociality and law-abiding spirit, which were the subvariables of sociability, and there was a positive correlation between rough-and- tumble play and sociability in general. Finally, as to the relationship between rough-and-tumble play and sociability by gender, there were marked differences between the preschool boys and girls. The rough-and-tumble play of the preschool boys was positively linked to their autonomy, leadership, stability, sociality and law-abiding spirit, which were the subvariables of sociability. As for the preschool girls, rough-and-tumble play had a positive correlation to sociability, one of the subvariables of sociability. In conclusion, there was a significant relationship between the rough- and-tumble play of the preschoolers and their sociability, and rough-and- tumble play especially had a strong relationship to sociability in both groups, one of the variables of sociability. Besides, rough-and-tumble play had a greater impact on the sociability of the preschool boys than that of the preschool girls. Therefore teachers should positively view the rough- and-tumble play of preschoolers as natural and discreetly consider how to back it up.
