The purpose of this study was to look into the relationships between the quality of peer relationship of adolescents and their emotional intelligence as well as the relationship between their ego-resilience and their emotional intelligence. To collect data, measures of the quality of peer relationship, measures of ego-resilience, and measures of emotional intelligence were performed on 439 middle school students living in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. SPSSWIN 12.0 was used to handle the collected data through correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows: First, the quality of peer relationship of adolescents and their ego-resilience were found to be correlated with their emotional intelligence. In other words, both the quality of their peer relationship as an environmental and cognitive variable and their ego-resilience as one of their personal psychological -41- characteristics may be regarded as variables correlated with their emotional intelligence. Second, subordinate factors from the quality of peer relationship of adolescents and those from their ego-resilience found to affect their emotional intelligence. As the subordinate factor from their ego-resilience, their interpersonal relations mostly affect their emotional intelligence followed by their positive quality of peer relationship and then their curiosity and emotional regulation, which are subordinate factors from the ego-resilience of adolescents. Based on the results of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: First, multi-dimensional approaches are required to enhance adolescents’ emotional and psychological stability and emotional intelligence. Thus, this study pointed out that the quality of peer relationship of adolescents and their ego-resilience are significantly indicative of their emotional intelligence, which could help seek alternative ways of enhancing their emotional intelligence. Second, if the significant relationships between the quality of peer relationship of adolescents and their ego-resilience and their emotional intelligence indicates their high satisfaction with their peer relationship and their ability to respond boldly to social and environmental factors, they will be psychologically and emotionally stable and mature and consequently able to develop smooth object relations; their satisfaction with their lives will also increase. Third, if the adolescents establish and maintain satisfactory peer relationship, they will be supported psychologically and emotionally; thus developing the ability to cope well with not only their own emotions but also those of others and function more adaptively. Fourth, if the adolescents also have high ego-resilience that controls and makes their behaviors and feelings adapt to environmental needs under the influence of their temperament or learning, and by experiencing a satisfactory peer relationship, they will be able to adapt better to life since they will understand and accept themselves and others by forming positive interpersonal relations and flexibly coping with even stressful situations.
