Appropriate food guides are necessary for childhood, because rapid growth and development of children are susceptible by change of nutrient and food intakes of pre-school children. The purpose of this study was to set up age groups for food guide for pre-school children and develop target pattern for each age group by analyzing nutrient intakes, food intakes, and food group intakes of pre-school children utilizing data of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES). The sample of this study consisted of 954 pre-school children aged 1 to 5 (boys: 500, girls: 454) who participated in 1st-2nd year's survey of 4th KNHANES(2007-2009). The height and weight measured in physical examination were used to calculate Estimated Energy Requirement(EER) of each age group. One year old pre-school children and 5 year old ones had significant difference in daily nutrient intakes, but 2 to 4 year old ones had similar intakes. As compared with Dietary Reference Intakes(KNS, 2010), the averages intakes of energy were 90.7% of EER for 1-2 year and 85.1% for 3-5 year old children. The intake percentages of calcium were 74.0% of recommended intake for 1-2 year and 65.3% for 3-5 year old children. The intake levels of iron were 83.3% of recommended intake for 1-2 year and 85.7% for 3-5 year old children. The intake levels of sodium were 164.9% of adequate intake for 1-2 year and 210.1% for 3-5 year old children. The average intakes protein, vitamin A, thiamin and riboflavin were above the recommended intakes. Amounts of intake of grain food group were different among 1 year, 2 year, and 5 year (p < 0.001) old children. Those of meat, fish, eggs, and beans group were different between 1 year and 3-4 year, and between 2 year and 5 year (p < 0.001) old children. Those of vegetables group were different between 1-4 year and 5 year (p < 0.001), milk and dairy products different between 1 year and 2-5 year (p < 0.01), and oils, fats and sugars different between 1 year and 5 year (p < 0.01). In general food intake patterns were different among 1 year, 2-4 year, and 5 year. As ages were increased from 1 to 5 years, intake levels of vegetable food increased and those of animal foods decreased. In food guide, representative foods of each food group were selected among major source foods providing important nutrients and mostly or frequently consumed food items consumed by 1-5 years old children. Serving size per capital was set up according to frequency and amount of each food intake. It was set as an average of 150 kcal for grains, 50 kcal for meat, fish, eggs, and beans, 7 kcal for vegetables, 50 kcal for fruits, 125 kcal for milk and dairy products, and 25 kcal for oils, fats and sugars. Energy level of food target pattern was set up as 900 kcal for 1 year, 1,300 kcal for 2-4 year, and 1,400 kcal for 5 year old children based on EER which were 907 kcal for 1 year, 1,285 kcal for 2-4 year, and 1,412 kcal for 5 year old children by applying standard weight and height. Target pattern with 900 kcal consists of 2.5 units of grains, 2.5 units of meat, fish, eggs, and beans, 4.5 units of vegetables, 1 unit of fruits, 2 units of milk and dairy products, and 1.5 units of oils, fats and sugars. Target pattern with 1,300 kcal consists of 4 units of grains, 3.5 units of meat, fish, eggs, and beans, 6 units of vegetables, 1 unit of fruits, 2 units of milk and dairy products, and 4 units of oils, fats and sugars. Target pattern with 1,400 kcal consists of 4.5 units of grains, 4 units of meat, fish, eggs, and beans, 8 units of vegetables, 1 unit of fruits, 2 units of milk and dairy products, and 5 units of oils, fats and sugars. Representative menus for age groups were prepared according to food target patterns and their nutrient contents were estimated using Computer-Aided Nutritional Analysis Program. Suggested food target patterns seem appropriate to attain nutritional goals of food guide for pre-school children.
