This treatise aims to analyze and define my paintings, based on theoretical backgrounds, which were exhibited at my solo exhibition for evaluating paintings to produce during graduate school to ask for master degree (May 13-19, 2009 at Dong-duk Art Gallery) with the theme of ‘Cupar! Roman-Chups – Looking into the World and Deviance’. During my graduate school days (from 2007 to 2009), themes and subject matters of my paintings were I, myself. A portrait, by manifesting the self-consciousness, is a painting to show not only how ‘I’ conceive of myself (in other words, a process of learning myself) but also what my aesthetic tastes - characteristics of its formative patterns - are. Human beings constantly ask themselves a question of who they are and continuously try to find the answer. It is an important motive as well as a crucial purpose of human lives. Also this can be regarded as one of the reasons why artists draw their self-portraits. The reason may be to fundamentally explore and express them. We can find the most candid images of painters in numerous portraits from the East and the West throughout many centuries. It is because the portraits were created not by others’ requests but by the painters’ self-consciousness. My paintings reflect my self-consciousness unintentionally. Looking back them over, I could find the ample record of the consciousness in them. My self-images appear continuously among the works I painted before 2007. Whatever themes were, my face appeared as a subject matter and continued to appear in my paintings during my undergraduate years when I didn’t realize its appearance. In the unconscious mind, I had used self-image as a subject matter, and continued painting without realizing it. During my graduate years, I finally realized that I had used it as a subject matter, and started to concern about the reasons. I reached a conclusion that my self-image came out from unconsciousness and was manifested as consciousness in my paintings. Sigmund Freud (1856 – 1939), the father of psychoanalysis, said that in the contemporary art, the unconscious mind is the bottom world of rationality and consciousness as well as imaginative foundation and source of inner expression in the acts of art. It is my self-portraits that are expressed in my works by recognizing the concept of ‘ego’ in unconsciousness (a key expressive source of my inner self) as consciousness. Throughout the long history of Eastern and Western paintings, a ‘face’ has been employed by many painters as a theme of their works in various ways, and for me, it is an important motive for my paintings. It can implicitly convey almost everything of human being than any other body parts. Also facial expressions exhibit diverse meanings. Through facial expressions, humans can communicate their intentions, impressions, feelings to others. Even though the appearance of ‘face’ as a subject matter in my paintings, starting points of my works, is not a new theme, I initiated this study to resolve my curiosity about how the face can offer visual pleasure and freshness. My self-portrait is not drawing my face factually but an attempt of combination with other mediums to manifest myself. New images of my paintings created by union of my face and a lollipop are not just manifestation of my inner self but also a way to recognize myself and to communicate with others through sharing other’s feelings. In other words, the image of a Chupa-Chups candy in my painting encourages its spectators to buy the brand’s candies and starts a new trend. I used the image to explicitly express my intentions by borrowing not only the image of the lollipop but also the brand’s image itself. After I saw supermarkets, through placing them near counters, induce customers to pick out one of Chupa-Chup candies while they were waiting for their turn, I metaphorically expressed ‘myself’ who wants to communicate with spectators closely. Works of art manifest the ego of their creators. Thinking reversely, production of the artworks is one of the ways to recognize myself. Therefore, in order to learn aesthetic values of my works and to get universality in the art circles, it is needed to first look into meanings of self-portrait and its expressive possibilities and then to find numerous manifesting ways of self-ego and universality based on them. So in Chapter II, Paragraph 1 studied meanings of self-portrait as a manifestation of ego as well as expression of self. Paragraph 2 searched, through portraits from Korea and western countries, how the painters in the East and the West have visualized their psychological world in an attempt to prove their existence and infuse their lives with meanings. And the paragraph reached a conclusion that western portraits were continuous manifestations of painters’ self-consciousness since the Renaissance, a period when humanism blossomed, and that Korean portraits were not just about drawing one person’s face but also about conveying his mind. As Korean portraits aim to deliver spirits, there are significant differences between Korean and western ones. Chapter III tracked down the time when I first used ‘myself’ as a subject matter of my paintings and found out that it was from my undergraduate years. I decided to unearth the fundamental reason why ‘I’ had appeared in my works in my unconsciousness. The unconsciousness that Freud mentioned was a starting point of my ego. I analyzed my self-image that persistently has appeared in my works after the undergraduate course and observed that motives of self-portraits in my graduate years had changed during the courses of creation. In order to understand what my unconsciousness is, I tracked down the meanings I had intended to express in my works in three points: 1. My face, glasses and facial expression, 2. A Chupa-Chups lollipop, 3. Roman-Chups, the combination of my face and the Chupa-Chups. I realized that, like the customers at supermarkets, who were induced to pick out one lollipop stationed near counters while waiting for their turn to check out, I communicated with the world by figuratively being the Roman-Chups expressed in mixture of colors. Looking at the works that expressed Chupa-Chups metaphorically, I came across that all human beings are products in today’s world of mechanization and materialization. However, all of them have different thoughts and individualities but when the individualities meet societies’ demands, those individualities would be shown up brightly. All the studies carried out in this paper were conducted after creation of my works. And the studies are the analysis results of them. Afterwards, my works of art may still be given priority over myself. Therefore, by the only one analysis of intentions as well as expressive ways of my works, I believe that I could bring light on my works’ characteristics, my consciousness as an artist and my unconsciousness as a human being and could know about myself and, furthermore, my works. And I believe that this paper would be foundation for prediction and interpretation of my future work and for progressiveness of my artistic activities.
