This study examined 14 relics where animal remains were excavated by dividing them into the Sacheonman, Masanman, and Nakdonggang(formerly Gimhaeman) division to understand how animal remains were used in southern coasts of Gyeongnam in the Iron Age. The research efforts identified a certain flow in animal remains excavated in those divisions and relics and shed light on to their characteristics. The locations of relics largely depended on the impacts of shores and sea water, lying around lavish woods of deciduous trees. Some were located at a high altitude of 200m or so in the 2nd and 3rd century that accounted for the latter half of the Iron Age. They must have moved their resident to a higher location that gave them an advantage in defense as there were conflicts among them due to increasingly colder climate and resulting reduction in food production. The excavated shells were mostly giant pacific oysters, shell fish, and gastropods, which were gathered from late autumn to early spring as the supplementary resources of food during winter. The red sea breams were found all over the divisions. They were captured in May and June when they moved to the entry of the bay to lay eggs. Also found were mullets, bass, black porgy and swellfish. The practice of catching sea lions with harpoons was prevalent all over the divisions. Judging from the sea lion remains at the relic inside the bay, their usefulness must have been great. On land, they usually hunted for deer and wild boars, of which deer were captured in large numbers because of the less risk involved in their hunts. Those mammals provided important resources for dietary life and other activities to maintain livelihood. The horns of deer and the limb bones of large mammals were fundamental materials for bone tools; their hides were used to make winter clothes; and their bone marrows were used as food and to smooth out animal skins. They raised such livestock as dogs, cows, and horses. The dog remains were found a lot in the Neukdo relic, where they buried the whole bodies of dogs along with the deceased. Cows and horses were used to transport agricultural products and commodities. As for birds, the remains of such resident birds as pheasants and chicken and such migratory birds as cormorants were usually found. The main purpose of raising pheasants and chicken was food. In the Yongwon relic, the remains of migratory water birds such as cormorants were excavated in a large amount. It is difficult to judge whether they hunted those birds on purpose. Those research findings show that people in the Iron Age utilized diverse kinds of animals including shells, fish, mammals, and birds to maintain their livelihood.
