The number of underground transportation facilities such as tunnels and underground stations have been rapidly increased in recent years to fulfill the demand of mass transportation and intercity connections, while the scale of underground structures are becoming bigger to satisfy the specification of the high speed trains. However, due to the nature of closed space, fire in the underground structures and tunnels tend to cause more severe damage to the human life and financial problem compared to that in the ground facilities. The underground structures are mostly made up of concrete material and, since the lining concrete applied to the soil embedded tunnel or underwater tunnel is the main structural member, spalling or exfoliation of the lining concrete caused by fire will result in the collapse in the worst case and it takes a long time to regain its function as an infrastructure. So far, researches on the fire resistance of the concrete structures have been mainly concentrated on the building structures and the studies on the underground structures including tunnels still remain in the initial stage. Specifically, studies on the structural safety as well as bearing capacity of the concrete lining exfoliated by fire and on the standard of the fire resistance design are needed to be established. A refractory mortar spreading on top of the existing concrete liner is proposed in this study to secure the stability of the railroad tunnel under fire. For this, a large reinforced concrete slab corresponding to the tunnel structure is manufactured and fire test is performed right after spreading the refractory mortar on the concrete slab. The ISO fire curve regulated by KS is employed during the fire test and RABT fire curves widely applied in the traffic tunnels are also considered. To prevent spalling and to reduce the heat conductivity, the refractory mortar composed of PP fiber and pearlite fine aggregate is utilized and additional tests such as residual rate of strength and heat conductivity are performed to obtain the optimum ratio of the mortar mix. Tests on the fire resistance capacity of the refractory mortar are performed by spreading 30~35 mm thick refractory mortar on top of the reinforced concrete. Furthermore, a thermodynamics coupled analysis is also carried out to make sure the fire resistance capacity of the refractory mortar in the real-scale tunnel structures The results of the fire experiment and numerical analyses show that the refractory mortar is fairly effective on lowering the heating temperature of the concrete including reinforcement bar in case of fire in the tunnel. Therefore, it is concluded that the refractory mortar spreaded on the concrete lining is very effective to maintain structural stability of the underground structures such as shield tunnel within soil layer, cut and cover tunnel and underwater tunnel where the concrete lining plays a major role as a structural member.
