The purpose of this study is to identify early childhood teachers' recognition on value and behavioral characteristics of rough and tumble play of children in early childhood education centers and to investigate the difference in recognition of teachers on such play activities and settings according to types of education center. The following research questions have been proposed: 1. Is there any significant difference in recognition of early childhood teachers on rough and tumble play of young children depending on teacher variables (types of institution, age, experience and educational background)? 2. Is there any significant difference in recognition of early childhood teachers on behavioral characteristics of rough and tumble play of young children, according to teacher variables(types of institution, age, experience and educational background)? 3. What is the recognition level of teachers on rough and tumble play and settings(play space and play time) based on types of institution? 4. Is there any significant difference in recognition levels of early childhood teachers on activation of rough and tumble play of young children based on teacher variables(types of institution, age, experience and educational background)?
A total of 220 early childhood teachers working at early childhood education centers located in Gwangju participated in this study. Surveys were conducted as a research method to identify early childhood teachers' recognition levels on value and behavioral characteristics of rough and tumble play. Subsequently, the surveys were supplemented and modified based on relevant literature and previous studies, and their validity and reliability were verified. Data analyses were conducted using SPSS 14.0. Basic statistical information such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation of data were derived. Additionally, the Chi-square analyses was performed to investigate behavioral characteristics of rough and tumble play, play activities and play settings relevant to each research question. In addition, one-way ANOVA was conducted on value and reactivation of rough and tumble physical play of young children in terms of each teacher variable. Finally, post hoc analyses using Schéffe test were conducted to detect significant between-group differences.
The results of this study are as follows: First, most of the early childhood teachers had positive recognition levels on the value of rough and tumble physical play. They perceived that young children should enjoy and have fun when engaging in rough and tumble play. They agreed that such rough and tumble play can provide young children with the opportunity to release their energy. With regard to recognition on the value of such play based on types of early childhood educational institutions, results indicated that early childhood teachers in public child care centers and public kindergartens placed higher value on rough physical activities than those who were working in private institutions. In addition, teachers who had higher educational background placed more value on such activities. Regarding the age variable, teachers who were between 35 - 40 years old had the best recognition on such play while teachers who were younger than 30 years old did not recognize the value of such activities very well.
Second, in terms of behavioral patterns of rough and tumble physical play, results indicated that young children ran around the playground, chased each other and displayed aggressive behaviors without a specific topic of play. In relation to the level of response and participation of other play activities, young children freely searched other play activities and were actively involved in such play activities. In addition, findings showed that young children who enjoyed rough and tumble play were not concentrating on class and displayed aggressive personalities. Meanwhile, teachers' attitudes towards educational activities and level of participation recognized that such rough activities greatly helped the physical development of young children and that it is a part of natural play for young children.
Third, young children who enrolled in public child care centers and public kindergartens enjoyed more rough physical play than children in private institutions. It was speculated that such results were found because private institutions had poorer environments for rough play and, accordingly, teachers limited young children to enjoy such rough physical activities. With regard to the types of play behavior, young children who were involved in physical contact behaviors mainly enjoyed pushing and pulling, climbing, challenging, pretend kicking and flailing their arms. On the other hand, young children in non-physical contact behaviors enjoyed running, screaming and escaping. More specifically, with regard to rough physical play settings, all early childhood educational centers had safe indoor and outdoor playgrounds except for private and home-based child care centers. Additionally, the findings indicated that appropriate time of rough physical activities was 30 minutes for children at child care centers and between 30 minutes to 1 hour for kindergarten children.
Fourth, with regard to teachers' recognition levels on rough and tumble play, most of the teachers indicated that such activities were not encouraged because of parents' sensitive concern of their children's safety. The need to prevent safety accidents brought by the head of child care centers, parents' demand on cognitive activities rather than physical activities and unclear classification between physical activities and fighting were mentioned as the reasons why such activities were not actively employed in the field. Similarly, in terms of types of early childhood educational institutions, the biggest reason that rough and tumble play were not likely to be employed in the field was unclear classification between rough physical activities and fighting. Especially, teachers who were working in private institutions had more difficulty in differentiating rough and tumble play from fighting between children than those who were working in public institutions. Although teachers with more than 10 years work experience placed important value on rough and tumble play, such rough and tumble play could not be activated because the head of child care centers had concern on children's safety accidents. On the other hand, some teachers recognized that excessive number of children in small classroom size also contributed to limiting such physical activities. Regarding educational background, teachers who had a diploma and a bachelor degree had more difficulty in arranging rough and tumble play than those who had a graduate degree because of parents' sensitive concerns on children's safety.
This study implied that it was necessary for the head of child care centers and and teachers to provide young children with rough and tumble play because rough and tumble play could be regarded as a part of natural play and greatly help physical development of young children. In addition, it was believed that this study could contribute to identifying the value of rough and tumble play and presented basic data to support adopting rough and tumble play for young children.
