Special Theory of Relativity and Kantian Theory of Time
Philosophical discussion about nature of time always leads us into aporia, whereas scientific inference concerning time seems to be reliable and verifiable. The aim of this thesis is to examine how the main concepts in special theory of relativity whose validity are already verified can be applied to the philosophical theory of time. The speed of time, according to the special theory of relativity, becomes slower in proportion to the speed of movement, and two events which one perceives simultaneously may seem to perceive successively to others. Those are two of the main characters of special theory of relativity, 'time dilation' and 'relativity of simultaneity'
This thesis demonstrate that 'time dilation' support Relational Theory (Leibniz) in stead of Absolute Theory, (Newton) and by analyzing the theory of 'relativity of simultaneity' in terms of set theory and tense logic, also demonstrates that time is unreal, while proving that Kantian statement that time is transcendentally idealistic is actually another version of the unreality of time. The final aim of this thesis is closely related to this fact. In short, this paper aims to suggest a theory of time which embraces both Relational Theory and Kantian concept of time which are not incompatible with each other, because time, as Kant suggests, is just a priori intuitive form, and the reason why we regard things as existing only in time is due to the fact that a certain relation between things is translated into the form of time, when they are perceived by us.
