The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of PBL-based elementary fourth-grade moral instruction on cognitive learning capabilities, emotion and behavior. The subjects in this study were 30 students who were in their fourth grade in an elementary school located in Incheon. After three topics were selected, experimental teaching was provided to them in nine sessions for approximately two months from September to early November, 2010. Before the experimental teaching was offered, data were gathered during a six-month period of time to lay the theoretical foundation for PBL, and the cognitive, emotional and environmental characteristics of the selected learners were investigated to map out lesson plans. After the selected units of the curriculum were analyzed, learning objectives were set to develop 'problems' that were considered most important in PBL, and appropriate learning materials were prepared. And then an evaluation method was selected to see whether there would be any changes in their learning capabilities and emotion. The classes that the students took were videotaped, and data were collected and analyzed, which involved the videotapes, an observational journal prepared by their teacher, the learning output of the students, their self-evaluation, mutual evaluation, evaluation by the group members, writings on how they felt about the instruction, transcribed data of interview and completed questionnaires. The findings of the study were as follows: First, there was a change in the learning capabilities of the learners. They underwent changes in problem-solving methods, acquisition of what they learned and evaluation skills while they engaged in PBL that took diverse approaches to problem solving to provide motivation instead of merely sticking to typical teacher-led directive instruction and questioning. In terms of the diversity of problem-solving methods, they got to solve the given problems in more diverse ways, and they became more cooperative and interactive in order to solve the problems in collaboration. And they showed improvement in understanding and acquiring what they learned. They already memorized various pieces of information and knowledge in the learning process though they weren't given any separate time to do that. The mutual evaluation process provided an opportunity for them to take a look at one another's task performance, and that experience allowed them to learn more from one another. In that process, they got to have a frequent talk and cooperate with the other members of their groups. Second, they took a more cooperative and independent learning attitude while they acquired moral knowledge and norms, and the changing learning attitude was followed by more moral changes in emotion and behavior. Most of the students came to regret their faults and indifference to morality, and explicitly talked about their regret often instead of just implicitly looking back on themselves. When they were asked a question what to do in the future, they responded in a constructive manner. Some answered they would inform others of what they learned, and the others replied that they wanted to study more about the topics. The findings of the study make it clear that PBL-based moral instruction is one of effective approaches to bring about moral changes in the cognitive, affective and behavioral domains, which is the essential goal of moral instruction.
