This study investigates the vegetation colony structure of Geumsun valley and Weonjeok valley of Naejangsan National Park to find out the ecological value and environmental difference between the two, and figures out the vegetation structure characteristics of these two valleys located at the border of temperate souther climate area and temperate central climate area to provide elementary material necessary for park management. Study stages were divided into general outlook on study theoretical considerations through research on existing documentation, subject area, and vegetation structure characteristics of Geumsun valley and Weonjeok valley. In the theoretical considerations through research on existing documentation, the study on vegetation structure of deciduous broad-leaved forest in valleys of national parks and study on vegetation of Naejangsan National Park were considered to understand the succession trend and species constitution characteristics of valley vegetations. The study subject areas were selected to be Geumsun valley and Weonjeok valley of Naejangsan National Park located south of Jeongeup-si, Jeonbuk as per administrative district, and the valley vegetation structure characteristics analysis was based on current vegetation, plant community structure, vegetation structure overall characteristics, and succession directions, and the study results are summarized as follows. Centering on Geumsun valley and Weonjeok valley of Naejangsan National Park and with the 3 ridge as the border, about 1,751,767㎡ of valley vegetation area was selected as the study subject area, and the natural ecology was analyzed through geographical/geological features, vegetation structure, soil characteristics and such. The altitude range of Geumsun valley and Weonjeok valley is 185~350m with altitude difference of 165m, which was higher than Naejangsa. The inclination was over 30° for 50.2% of the area with steep incline, and it was difficult to approach for its characteristics of being belemnite area. The geological status was mostly composed of rock formation and rock floor of Naejangsa volcanic rocks (knv) of Mesozoic Era / Cretaceous period. As the result of analysis of current vegetation, Quercus variabilis community (23.6%) was widely distributed in steep inclines of south-facing slope and rocky lands around Geumsun valley and Weonjeok valley, and Quercus serrata community was dominant in the forest south of Geumsun valley, indicating that oaks at the middle stage of succession such as Quercus variabilis and Quercus serrata are dominant species of Naejangsan district. As for vegetation community structure, total of 20 investigation areas (400㎡) were set and divided into 6 communities of Fraxinus mandshurica, Carpinus tschonoskii, Carpinus tschonoskii-Platycarya strobilacea-Zelkova serrata, Zelkova serrata, deciduous broad-leaved mixture (Zelkova serrata-Lindera erythrocarpa-Acer palmatum), and Lindera erythrocarpa-Cornus walteri. The Shannon's species diversity was found to be 0.8220~1.3850 per unit area of 400㎡ showing no big difference per area, and the similarity index was the highest between Zelkova serrata and deciduous broad-leaved mixture at 59.14. Considering the correlation between species, Acer mono and Fraxinus rhynchophylla were recognized for a positive correlation at the 1% significance level and Carpinus tschonoskii, Daphniphyllum macropodum, Meliosma oldhamii, and Cornus controversa at 5% significance level. On the other hand, Carpinus tschonoskii and Staphylea bumalda at 1% significant level, and Carpinus tschonoskii and Zelkova serrata, Carpinus tschonoskii and Lindera erythrocarpa were recognized for negative correlation. As the result of soil analysis, soil characteristics were mostly silt loam, and soil acidity was weakly acidic with pH 4.45~5.67 which was slightly higher than average acidity of non-cultivated mountainous soil, and most areas were found to be suitable for growth and development of deciduous broad-leaved forest. The soil analysis results of this study subject areas coincided with the existing study results that as the forest was closer to the broad-leaved mixture forest, the soil nutrition state such as soil acidity, organic matter contents, available phosphate, and exchangeable cation contents appear favorable. Summarizing the vegetation structure characteristics of valley parts of Naejangsan National Park, Geumsun valley is mainly the rocky area of a very steep incline where major species such as Carpinus tschonoskii, Quercus serrata, Daphniphyllum macropodum, Ilex macropoda, Meliosma oldhamii, and Fraxinus mandshurica are distributed. Daphniphyllum macropodum emerges as the lower class vegetation in the hierarchical structure of the highest state stabilized by Carpinus tschonoskii, and the succession trend of oaks (Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata) → Carpinus tschonoskii was observed. Weonjeok valley, as a rocky area with less steep incline than Geumsun valley, was distributed with major species of Zelkova serrata, Acer palmatum, Lindera erythrocarpa, Cornus controversa, Cornus walteri, and such. In canopy layer, Zelkova serrata and other various types of deciduous broad-leaved large poles were dominant, and in under stay layer and shrub layer, Acer palmatum was dominant. In succession trend, competition with Lindera erythrocarpa and Acer palmatum would continue and the continuous Zelkova serrata community would persist, indicating that this subject area exhibits the representative characteristics of temperate southern area deciduous broad-leaved community. The existing studies on domestic forest community structure analysis and vegetation investigation study mostly concerns the valleys of temperate central areas, but the studies on valleys of Naejangsan National Park which can represent the temperate southern area were inadequate, so that the execution of this study is significant. Through past resources, however, the study on the entire vegetation community structure of Naejangsan National Park and resources of natural resource investigation could be found, but there were limitations to this study in collecting the resources related to forest structure research and soil characteristics due to slop direction and height above sea level. Thus, an in-depth research related to valley vegetation and soil environment must proceed; especially the study on establishment of practical management plan and continuous monitoring survey for effective management of succession climax forest such as Carpinus tschonoskii must follow.
