The research for this thesis was conducted to increase the value and modern significance of the classical narrative literature at school. The study about characters appearing in the classical narrative literature has an educational value by contributing to understanding the society of the time and exploring the essence of human being.
Compared with other classical narrative literature, independent femininity of female characters is conspicuously manifested in both Segyeong-bonpuri, a narrative myth, and Woonyoung-jeon, a classical novel, where female characters actively achieve love of their own free will. This thesis regards both of the works as feminism literature and aims to identify the value and modern meaning of the classical narrative literature through a comparative study on femininity and love of the characters.
Segyeong-bonpuri is a typical female literature created and passed down by shamans and female folks, while Woonyoung-jeon was created by male writers of progressive ideas and then accepted by female readers, representing the perceptions of the contemporary high class women. In addition, both of them can be said to have features of feminism literature in that Segyeong-bonpuri revealed the world and values that are unique to women through a heroine’s life story and Woonyoung-jeon depicted resistance against oppressive feudalism through the first person point of view of a female character.
Jacheongbi, the heroine of Segyeong-bonpuri, who is the god of agriculture in Korea, is an ordinary heroine having typicality of female folks and later ascends to the position of goddess by overcoming obstacles coming from marriage with Mundoryeong. Jacheongbi is an unusual character who obtains masculinity through gender-reversal but remains to have femininity throughout. Mundoryeong and Jeongsunam represent a certain aspect of male power, respectively in terms of social superiority and biological dominance.
Woonyoung, a heroine of Woonyoung-jeon, is a woman of independent thinking and action who aggressively seeks affection despite all the order and ethics of the time. The court ladies of Sooseong Palace, including Jaran, are also characters that possess a strong sense of identity and individuality, who display sisterhood by helping Woonyoung overcome a forbidden love, displaying sisterhood. On the other hand, Prince Ahnpyung is an ideal monarch but reveals his limitation as a patriarchal humanist, while magistrate Kim is a man of progressive ideas but can’t surpass the limit of a romantic intellectual.
Based on the analysis of the characters in Segyeong-bonpuri and Woonyoung-jeon, these two works are complementary to each other as feminism literature in terms of manifestation of femininity and love pattern.
Regarding femininity, Jacheongbi has an ‘expanded femininity’ that embraces not only Mundoryeong and Jeongsunam but also all the people on the earth, while Woonyoung has an ‘emotional femininity’ that displays a very noble and pure love for magistrate Kim through a delicate sense unique to women. Thus, Jacheongbi’s expanded femininity and Woonyoung’s emotional femininity can be said to be complementary to each other, composing independent femininity.
As for love, the love of Jacheongbi and Mundoryeong is a realistic love consisting of conflict and harmony between animus and anima, while the love of Woonyoung and magistrate Kim is an unconditional and romantic love having a tragic connotation. The realistic, ordinary love of Jacheongbi and Mundoryeong is complementary to the idealistic, romantic love of Woonyoung and magistrate Kim, both functioning as one aspect of love.
This study is supposed to recover the precious value of the classical narrative literature which is exploited only as texts for entrance exam in the current high school classrooms, and further to increase the consciousness of teenagers regarding right femininity and love through the independent female characters, Jacheongbi and Woonyoung.
