The soft ground improvement method or the pile method can take a long period construction time with a high cost to construct a relatively light structure on a soft clay ground. In this case, the partial replacement method is effective to shorten the construction time with a lower cost. When the partial replacement method is utilized, a bearing capacity must be checked under the condition of the ground with sand overlying soft clay.
To analyze the bearing capacity of a footing for sand overlying clay, ultimate bearing capacity equations based on the limit equilibrium method are commonly used in domestic design practice. But there are several problems with the estimation and the evaluation of the bearing capacity for sand overlying soft clay. The first problem is the load spreading mechanism for estimating a bearing capacity. Even though the load spread angle is varied under diverse conditions, bearing capacity equations and applied bearing capacity equations using fixed load-spread angle are widely used. In the case of using the P.B.T, which is largely used in an in-situ bearing capacity evaluation, a verifying boring is needed in the ground condition due to the stress bulb. For the economical efficiency, a solid estimation of the bearing capacity is needed from a design stage. Furthermore, when a partial replacement is carried on, the upper sand layer has a limited width. If existing ultimate bearing capacity equations are applied, it will be a dangerous design with overestimating a bearing capacity.
Therefore, in this study the characteristics of the ultimate bearing capacity under a shallow foundation are investigated in the cases of sand overlying soft clay and a partial replacement. As the main study methods, 2-dimensional laboratory model tests and FEM analyses are conducted. Besides the tests of bearing capacity, stress of the bottom of the sand and displacements around the foundation are measured. After loading a constant load, a displacement is measured in the course of time for some cases. FEM analyses are performed to verify the bearing capacity tests. These data from FEM analyses are used in data analyses with results of the model tests. Through the these method, it is considered to evaluate the bearing capacity and the behavior about diverse conditions of depth and width for the sand overlying soft clay.
The laboratory model chamber test consists of a 2-dimensional strip foundation. The clays are prepared by 3 kinds of undrained shear strength, and the widths B of foundations are 0.1m, 0.2m and 0.3m. In case of B=0.3m, depth ratio H/B=0.5 is only carried on due to the side friction of the chamber. For the all cases, tests are conducted by applying the varied width B' of the sand layer. Cases of the FEM analyses are same as the model chamber tests, but in the cases of B=0.2m and 0.3m, FEM analyses are carried on until those bearing capacities reach the bearing capacity of the single sand layer.
In the case of half space sand ground, ultimate bearing capacities from the laboratory model tests are similar with those from the FEM analyses. And it shows that the equations of the Hanna & Meyerhof and the Okamura et al. are suitable. But the results of using the equation of the Okamura et al. have different results from this study at low undrained shear strength because clays in the Okamura’s study are relatively higher than a general soft clay. To make the continual application of load spreading mechanism, the equivalent load spread angle is proposed for H/B and qc/qs. Also, the linear regression equation of critical depth ratio Hf is suggested for qc/qs.
When an upper replacement sand layer is not the half space condition, a bearing capacity is lower than those of the half space condition. The more H/B increases, the more decline gap of the bearing capacity increases. And, the more qc/qs increases, the more decline gap of the bearing capacity decreases. To quantify these trends, the ultimate bearing capacity decline coefficient κ is introduced by regression curves and it is shown as graphs.
The ratio of the bearing capacity from the earth pressure meter at the border of the sand and the clay and a bearing capacity from the load cell is calculated. The more H/B increases, the more ratio decreases. And the more B' increases, the more ratio decreases. The displacements around the foundation converge at the point of the displacement of the load plate against the ultimate bearing capacity. The time-displacement curves from loading allowable bearing capacities are analyzed by the hyperbolic method. As a result, the expected final displacements and the 90% consolidation degrees do not relate to the width of the sand. But those decrease with increasing the H/B.
