The performing arts are an ‘art of presence’ in that both the producer and the consumer have to be present at a certain location at the same time. In the market of musicals, there are times when repeat consumers make up over 20% of the audience therefore it is necessity to do research on repeat consumption. Repeat consumption demands a new approach to research on the development of consumption at the performance site througha look at sociological and aesthetic theories. The purpose of this research is to fuse the positions of sociological and aesthetic views based on the psychology and ideas of consumption by establishing a systematic theory about the phenomenon of repeat consumption of the performing arts as well as to propose an interdisciplinary system of thought based on an analysis of the characteristics and inclinations of the repeat consumers' spending patterns and experiences when it comes to musicals. The research problem was formulated around the following factors: the occurrence and process of repeat consumption, the relationship between the personality traits of the repeat consumers and their preferred musical genre, and the repeat consumers' attitude, behavior and experiences in consumption. A rehabilitated technique of study for the theories of performance studies, arts marketing, psychology, sociology, aesthetics, and philosophy was used for the theoretical contemplation study. The sensation seeking and sensibility tests developed by Elain Aron were used to examine the psychological aspect ofthe repeat consumers' attitude and experiences. In order to analyze the empirical aspect of this research, a research topic was set up to survey 54 repeat consumers and 48 heavy users through the cooperation of system operators from the internet communities ‘Intermission’ and ‘Musical Mania.’ Information was gathered through in-depth interviews and FGI of repeat consumers and heavy users from these communities. An empirical analysis was executed by utilizing SPSS to perform correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, T-test, F-test, and Principal components analysis. The results are as follows: First, by analyzing an ontological trait (presence) of a performing art, sensory pleasure (a musical’s product characteristic), fandom, and embodied taste, the main factors of musicals’ repeat consumption were presence and sensual pleasure. Out of the different kinds of consumption experiences, such as maintaining optimum stimulus level, empathy, difference in consumption, and tactile experience, the most important experience in repeat consumption was to maintain an optimum stimulus level. Empathy is the next important factor for promoting repeat consumption. The musical's multimodality and multi-sensory awareness help to familiarize the genre to the general public and promotes repeat consumption. Second, the general consumer has the sensation seeking trait (SS). But repeat consumers have a lower SS trait and less openness. They prefer specific types of musicals rather than a variety of musical types. Third, the repeat consumer builds a taste community and performs a variety of activities. Repeat consumers are aware of their consumer behavior and display signs of a rational addiction in that they recognize the results of their behavior. Fourth, the repeat consumer favors the sensual pleasure that comes from watching a musical, and the primary motivation is immediate gratification and enjoyment of the musical. Performances are a form of art that generates different impressions from the similar; repeat consumers consume these differences through repeat consumption. Repeat consumption is the reproduction of a consumer experience and a behavior that attempts to maintain a past optimum stimulation level. Fifth, the main distinction between repeat consumersand general consumers is the experience of presence. Repeat consumers tend to immerse themselves while watching the musical they empathize with the actors and have an intense experience ofidentification. This type of interaction comes from the inter-corporeality of the repeat consumer and the actor. In order to establish a system of thought about the consumerism of the performing arts, the following proposals are concluded from the results of the research: First, it is important to understand the complex circumstances of current times as well as history in correlation tothe performing arts. Therefore an interdisciplinary and systematic method of research that fuses together marketing, art business administration, sociology, aesthetics and art psychology must be employed. Second, repeat consumers tend to favor sensational and dark musicals to the extreme which leads them to repeatedly consume sensational and dark musicals. In order to rationalize performing arts activities and the system of consumerism, an in-depth method of research that uses professional and psychological means must be adopted. Third, the effort to develop the performance market has placed too much emphasis on musicals, which in turn has lessened interest in traditional culture. In order to prevent the loss of cultural diversity, a balance of various genres must be provided to the public. Fourth, performances are fundamentally limited in 'presence.' Therefore it is necessary to respect the value of the performing arts by moving away from the viewpoint of the culture industry, which makes profit through the commercialization of performances. Measures should be suggested that evaluate the performing arts for its cultural value rather than its commercial value.
