This study examined the influence of rehydration fluid temperature and constituents on body weight, the amount of fluid intake, urine specific gravity, heart rate, rectal temperature, and blood lactate following 2% of body weight reduction during exercise in heat. Eight physically and mentally healthy college men without known heat illness history and cardiorespiratory diseases were recruited. They were tested in an euhydrated state with four hours postprandial period and abundant fluid intake 2 hours prior to the tests. They exercised in a chamber maintained 36-38℃ and 50-60% relative humidity until they lost 2% of their baseline body weight. After the exercise they rested for 90 min. and consumed one of four kinds of fluid; 10℃ water, 10℃ sports drink, 26℃ water, or 26℃ sports drink. All data were expressed in mean and standard deviation. Using SPSS 12.0 Window version, two-way ANOVA with repeated measures were utilized for comparing conditions by time periods. Based on the analyses, primarily no differences were found in body weight, the amount of fluid intake, urine specific gravity, heart rate, rectal temperature, and blood lactate regardless fluid temperature and constituents. Secondary, they preferred cool temperature (10℃) sports drink. Thirdly, by comparing the baseline body weight and the final body weight during recovery, their body weight recovery to the baseline was fast as they consumed more fluid. Fourthly, they consumed less amount of fluid than they lost when they were allowed in ad libitum for 90 min. of recovery. Collectively, a cool temperature sports drink was efficient for fast rehydation after 2% of body weight reduction during exercise in heat. Recovery to the baseline body weight was closely related with the amount of fluid intake, and this supported previous studies.
