A curtain type breakwater is the basic structural form composed of a curtain(breakwater board) decreasing waves and a pile structure supporting the board, and the most important feature of the structure is to keep the in-and-out water flow in a harbor smooth through the underneath of it. It is suitable for an inland sea and an inside of a harbor which wave height is low in, and it has remarkable adaptability for weak stratum due to its light weight and the advantage that the supporting structure is able to be composed of a pile shape. However, there are actual construction cases for Yuho harbor in Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do and wharf of Busan KCG which caused various damages and redesign costs due to wrong prediction on changes in water flow and transmission. Therefore, this report shows the study on hydraulic characteristics acquired by an numerical analysis solution, hydraulic and numerical model experiments to correct the wrong analysis on the characteristics of a curtain type breakwater, and investigation for application was also performed on an actual sea area. The numerical analysis solution was conducted by establishing a solution on one-barrier perforated or non-perforated breakwater with eigenfunction expansion method applied in linear wave theory and potential function in complex number, and MATLAB and Mathcad program were used for the analysis. Its outcome was mutually compared with old numerical analysis solutions and hydraulic experiments. In addition, the study expanded the result for one-barrier breakwater to lead a new numerical analysis solution for two-barriers porous curtain type breakwater. The outcome from the analysis was compared with old hydraulic experiments, and also it contains the research about changes in reflection and transmission caused by gaps between breakwaters. The hydraulic model experiment was conducted with an installed model based on the curtain type breakwater in Euyujung harbor, Sukmo-do. Characteristics of reflection and transmission were analyzed by changing conditions such as depth of water, wave (height of the wave and wave cycle), water exchange outlets(the distance from sub-bottom to the end of breakwater, curtain depth) and porous rate of breakwater boards. Most of all, it was considered as the first time in this field of study to install holes directly on the curtain type breakwater board and analyze them. The numerical model experiment was conducted with FS-2DV (Free Surface 2-Dimension Vertical) model which was invented in this study, and then was compared and verified with the numerical analysis solution and the hydraulic model experiment. PREC (Polynomial Reconstruction and Error Correction) was recommended in this experiment to solve the problem caused during free water surface analysis with VOF(Volume Of Fluid). This method consists of 3 steps; applying polynomial function in the stage of free water surface reproduction, applying projective method in the stage of convective current calculation, and redistributing error. Also, suddenly changed or over/under- calculated F value is redistributed to close grids. Investigation applying the study with the proven FS-2DV model was performed for curtain type breakwaters in Gangmoon beach, Gangwon-do and Hangnanggok harbor, Gyeonggi-do which were selected for this research. Consequently, according to overall study on the numerical analysis solution, the hydraulic and numerical model experiments, and the result of application in an actual sea area. First, a curtain type breakwater should be applied limitedly in cases with long wave cycle because the transmission by the wave more than 9 sec. of wave cycle is over 0.8 on any breakwater. Second, there is decrease of transmission for double barriers breakwater by up to 15% rather than single barrier breakwater, but it should be considered that drastic changes in reflection and transmission will be caused by the distance between breakwaters. Third, the transmission is the lowest when the distance between breakwaters is about 4 times longer than the height of a breakwater in the section with 4~6 sec of wave cycle. The FS-2DV model which precisely calculate hydraulic characteristics and free water surface can be used perfectly for the design of a curtain type breakwater.
