Six evergreen ground-cover species were tested and evaluated for cold acclimation with various different light and relative humidity treatments among different regions in central Korea to enrich the varieties of ground cover plants for over-wintering. 1. During winter, half-evergreen species, Abelia grandiflora, was stable in two different locations in Seoul, Banpo, and Jamsil, respectively. This species had higher chlorophyll unit in Banpo with shade condition than with full sunlight condition. 2. Nandina domestica which recently started to be planted in central Korea had high chlorophyll unit with shade condition in both locations, Banpo and Gwacheon during winter. Light condition had no influence on chlorophyll unit in Banpo after April, meanwhile full sunlight condition decreased chlorophyll unit significantly in Gwacheon, which is exposed to cold wind from north. 3. Ophiopogon japonicas had more than double chlorophyll unit in shade condition compared to that in full light condition in all evaluation sites in February. There was no difference in chlorophyll unit with light condition within Banpo in April. However, leaves in Gwacheon were de-colorized with full light over the winter. 4. To compare the climates between southern and central area of Korea, annual mean temperature (AMT) and relative humidity (RH) data were collected from Jeonju and Wando for southen Korea and Seoul for central Korea in 2008 and 2009. 5. Compared to Jeonju and Wando, AMT in Seoul was 7.75 and 9.30℃ lower, respectively, in 2008 and was 5,43 and 10.85℃ lower, respectively, in 2009. Likewise, the RH mean across year in Seoul was 10.17 and 18.64% lower in 2008, and 4.92 and 9.84% lower in 2009. However, the variation of RH between south and center was high in January and February in both years (RH in Seoul was 33.13 and 23.78% lower in 2008, and 20.89 and 20.02% in 2009, respectively). 6. All species had no direct damage from coldness although they had differences in L, a, and b value. However, leaves of Nandina domestica turned red or fell down in Seoul but not in Jeonju and Wando. Interestingly, Ophiopogon japonicus with shade in Seoul was not damaged although it was known to be susceptible to coldness. 7. Treatments with different light conditions from February to May in field indicated that the survival rate among each species varies tremendously. With full sun, the survival rate of Hedera helix and Pachysandra terminalis were extremely poor, while those of Ajuga reptans and Sedum rupestre were over 60%. However, with shade condition, those of Hedera helix ‘Ivalace’, Pachysandra terminalis, and Sedum rupestre especially increased as light weakened. 8. Treatments with two different RH at 25℃ for three species, Ajuga reptans, Hedera helix ‘Ivalace’, and Pachysandra termnialnis, showed that low RH (30%) desiccated above-ground part and that moderate RH (50 to 80%) influenced the survival rate of species differently. In this condition, Pachysandra terminalis had the best survival rate, which had the lowest ratio of fresh weight to dry weight, and Ajuga reptans had the lowest rate. With high RH (80%), the survival rate of Ajuga reptans (26.82% in ratio of fresh weight to dry weight) was highest and the other two had similar rate although the survival rate of all those species were relatively high.
