Glue the natural adhesive of animal origin, has been used in diverse fields including painting, wood furniture, handicraft, etc. for a long time. In oriental painting, it is utilized as an ointment to help color development by reducing absorption of bottom material, also as a fixing agent for adhesion of pigments. In the field of conservation and restoration of the cultural properties, this glue has been used in reinforcement treatment for deteriorated parts of painting, mural painting, and wooden materials, etc, as well as for the cracked and desquamated parts. It displays the strength as of natural adhesive having reversibility where the adhesive substance can be melted again by water. From the studies of the historical records, the researcher was able to discover a variety of glue i.e. fish glue, deer glue, rabbit skin glue, boar glue, etc. including the glue made from horse, other than the hide glue which can be easily found. These glues were used in a different manner according to its kind. These days, among these glues, the hide glue is most used in the oriental paining, and the fish glue is used in sutra copying and Buddhist painting. For conservation and restoration of the orient paintings, the glue, called ‘rabbit skin glue’ of which raw material is rabbit skins, is being used. However, these glues are being selected mostly by the buyers’ experiences rather than the objective information of its components, for those glues in the market that people can easily get do not carry information about components thereof. In this study, the researcher investigated the kinds of glue and its usage through literature review, and tried to find the suitable glue for conservation and restoration of oriental painting by means of a comparative and empirical test of glues. The results revealed that the rabbit skin glue had a stabilized adhesive strength in adhesion of pigments even under low concentration. And it had stronger adhesive force than others even with a small amount. Also that white chromaticity was highest, so that the researcher presumed that this glue had the least effect on the color of the picture surface. The test showed that, under the condition of similar adhesive strength among three kinds of glue, the rabbit skin glue of the lowest concentration had the greatest flexibility, and the hide glue with the highest concentration had the lowest flexibility. The contractibility was high in the glue of either similar or of high concentration. And the test results verified that the adhesive strength was similar to that of 5 percent concentration of fish glue, 10 percent concentration of hide glue, and 2 percent of rabbit skin glue. In this case, the flexibility and white chromaticity had become lower than that of the rabbit skin glue. Since the glue of high concentration is to be painted thicker than that of low concentration. There is a possibility of the occurrence of secondary damage due to so thick thickness thereof during attaching the exfoliated pigments. In particular, in case of the cultural property like the oriental paintings: in a deteriorated condition because of frequent folding and unfolding jobs. Therefore, it is judged that the rabbit skin glues which will be easily glued even with thin spread of low concentration are mostly suitable for treatment of reinforcing pigments for oriental paintings. Likewise, there are differences in the properties of glue according to the kinds of its material so that it is important to use the glues in a proper way. From now on, we are required to know the physical properties of each glue through further researches, and should present the direction for proper use of glue.
