The purpose of this study was to closely examine influence of wheelchair weight loading during wheelchair treadmill exercise upon aerobic capacity and lactic acid concentration. The research subjects were 11 players for the amateur wheelchair basketball club who are attending B university in Chungcheong-do Province. These people were students who have no physical disability and who are skillful in manipulating wheelchair owing to wheelchair basketball training for over 4 months at least. The aerobic capacity was measured ventilation rate, maximum oxygen intake, and heart rate with Automatic Metabolic Test System(Quarkb2) by carrying out Wheelchair Treadmill GXT three times after changing wheelchair weight into 20%, 30%, 40% out of weight. The lactic acid concentration was measured totally 5 times in case of being stabilized, right after exercise, 2 minutes, 4 minutes, and 6 minutes in recovery with Lactate Test Meter(YSI). The wheelchair weight of corresponding to 20%, 30%, 40% of weight was changed into three kinds by using supplement under the wheelchair sheet. Subjects were randomly distributed, were fixed to 5.7km/h, and were applied Modified Balke-Ware protocol, which increased gradient by 1% every 1 minute and 30 seconds. It was carried out until when exercise performance is voluntarily impossible or when treadmill exercise is impossible. Data analysis was used SPSS ver. 12.0 program. The mean and the standard deviation in each measurement variable were calculated. It was carried out One Way ANOVA to analyze difference in aerobic capacity according to 3 kinds of weight loading, and Two-way ANOVA to analyze difference in lactic acid concentration according to weight loading. The statistical significant level was set for p<.05. The conclusions, which were elicited through this study, are as follows. The wheelchair weight loading during wheelchair treadmill GXT had no influence upon maximum ventilation rate, maximum oxygen intake, maximum heart rate, aerobic capacity in energy consumption, and lactic acid concentration after the maximum exercise. The exercise duration was shorter in the bigger weight loading. A follow-up research needs to be continued even a research on the appropriate loads according to a method of directly wearing weight material in the body during wheelchair exercise, and to the loading location. When researching by adding dynamic part, it is thought to be likely to be possibly more specific and useful materials for wheelchair weight loading.
