A Study On Phased Teaching Method Of Janggu Beating Techniques For Teaching Jangdan Effectively원문보기

In the seventh national curriculum which started in 2,000, the subject of music takes up Korean traditional music by 40 percent. The school curriculum emphasizes learning jangdan (similar to the concept of rhythm in western music), which is one of the important factors in Korean traditional music, by performing the Janggu. However, it is hard to find teachers letting their students know jangdan by playing the Janggu, or students singing while playing the Janggu. One of the causes for this phenomenon is the absence of effective teaching method of acquiring techniques for playing the Janggu systematically. Thus, the purpose of this research is to develop a teaching method of teaching jangdan on the actual education spot more easily and effectively by examining the basic techniques for beating the Janggu, which should be precedence, and then by developing basic etudes based on each technique. The necessity of this research lies not just in developing referential materials for students but also in providing incumbent teachers who want to learn Janggu jangdan with materials for them to use. Therefore, based on jangdan that I have learned in the graduate courses, a systematic method is constructed as below: First, basic techniques for beating the Janggu are described in detail. In addition to the techniques we already know as 'goong(the oral sound for beating once with the round-tip stick in the left hand)' and 'ttah(the oral sound for beating strongly once with the thin bamboo stick in the right hand)', 'googoong(the oral sound for beating twice with the round-tip stick in the left hand of which the first sound is very short, weak, and soft)', 'neomgimchae(the technique for beating the right side of the instrument with the round-tip stick in the left hand)', 'deoh(the oral sound for beating relatively weakly the left side of the instrument with the thin bamboo stick in the left hand)', and 'gideok(the oral sound for beating with the thin bamboo stick in the right hand of which of the first sound is very short and weak made by the tip of the stick)'are described with photos attached. The 'outward deoh(the oral sound for beating the right side of the instrument very softly and weakly with the thin bamboo stick in the right hand by using only the tip of the stick for the sound to be outward)' especially plays a key role to make jangdan more elaborate. Second, the beat and the beat division are briefly described, and a simple teaching method is presented. Korean traditional jangdan, or rhythm consists of crotchets and dotted crotchets, and combination of dotted crotchets and crotchets. (A beat of a time in Korean traditional music is marked as a crotchet or a dotted crotchet according to jangdan. A crotchet be divided into two, and a dotted crotchet can be divided into three.) Knowing the construction of the beat helps express jangdan more effectively. Third, steps of teaching method of beating the Janggu are presented. Practices for 'goong' and 'ttah', practices for 'deong (the oral sound for beating the left and the right side of the instrument at the same time)', practices for 'gideok' and the 'outwrad deoh' on the left side of the instrument, and practices for 'neomgimchae' are described step by step with explanations for intensive training. This research for the phased teaching method of Janggu beating techniques draws the following conclusions. First, the first things to be taught to novices are basic techniques for beating the Janggu and breathing. Being different from that of western's, the rhythm of Korean traditional music puts an emphasis on breathing. Second, in teaching techniques for beating the Janggu, taking steps is desirable. Without the basic techniques for 'goong' and 'ttah', getting directly into the high level of practice for 'gidoek' and 'neomgimchae' is like building a house on sand. Third, the presented etudes helps practice techniques for beating the Janggu intensively for more training. Things presented item by item and step by step will surely be of help for stable beating techniques. Fourth, phased etudes for beating techniques can make teaching jangdan more effective. Recombining the phased etudes together can produce basic jangdan for 'jajinmori' and 'gootgeori' (both of them have the time of 4 to a dotted crochet, but the tempo of the former is twice faster than that of the latter), and the stable techniques and breathing can be the basis for elaborate jangdan. This research puts an emphasis on developing a phased teaching method of beating techniques and developing etudes. Based on years of experience, what is presented in this research is surely to be of help for effective teaching method for jangdan. However, as this method has not taken steps yet to be applied and assessed on the education spot, its effectiveness is hard to define. Therefore, as a researcher, I'm planning to keep applying this method into the education spot and doing research to contribute to Korean music education. In addition to the teaching method presented in this research, more systematic and advanced researches should be done for teaching how to beat the Janggu with more various techniques.
