This study was conducted to identify the effect of Feldenkrais Method on the ability of body awareness and physical expression, and dance ability achievement in modern dance majors. Measured were the changes in the subjects of the experimental group(program-applied group) and the differences between pre-test and post test outputs of each individual group. In addition, physical and psychological changes in the participants promoted by the application of the program were explored and analyzed through further interview. To achieve the goal of the study, quantitative research and qualitative research were combined. The subjects for purposeful sampling were selected from S university located in Seoul and consisted of 20 modern dance majors with a dance career for more than 5 years. The data from the survey on the experimental group and control group were analyzed through each t-test for independent samples and matching samples. Furthermore, 5 subjects were selected again out of the experimental group with ideal case-sampling method and, along with the contents of further interview, the materials from literature search and observation/experience journal were categorized with inductive analysis method. The findings from the process are as follows. First, the results from the comparative analysis of pre/post tests on the ability of body awareness in the two groups of modern dance majors, the Feldenkrais Method applied group and the none applied, showed significant differences in ‘body competence’ for the experimental group and ‘internal awareness' for the control group. Second, the comparative analysis of pre/post tests on the ability of physical expression indicated a noticeable difference in ‘expressiveness’ and ‘diversity’ for experimental group and a significant difference in ‘semanticity’ for control group. Third, in dance ability achievement, the experimental group showed statistically higher values in each sub-scale ‘dance understanding’, ‘dance creativity’ and ‘performance’ than the control group, and demonstrated a greater degree of improvement in every ability. To support and supplement the results from quantitative research mentioned above, further interview was performed and the findings of inductive analysis are as follows. First, the contents of physical and psychological changes in the ability of body awareness were classified into 4 major items ‘physical interest’, ‘physical competence’, ‘body-type perception’ and ‘internal awareness’. Second, the contents of physical and psychological changes in the ability of physical expression were classified into 4 major items ‘expressiveness’, ‘diversity’, ‘semanticity’ and ‘individuality’. Third, the contents of physical and psychological changes in dance ability achievement were classified into 3 major items ‘performance’, ‘dance creativity’ and ‘dance understanding’. To sum the findings above, Feldenkrais Method aroused, to a great extent, the improvement of ability and the shift into the perspective viewing body and soul together in modern dance majors exposed to the conditions focused on the apparent aesthetic.
