We performed the research to reveal the spatio-temporal variability of environmental characteristics on the water and sediments from Gamak bay, Deukryang bay, and Doam bay in which sea environment and ecosystem are preserved well to be the objective sea of study and which are Environment Conservation Sea Area requiring continuous conservation. Water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen(DO) showed typical seasonal variation of temperate oceanic climate in all the sea. Especially DO showed hypoxia from the oxygen consumption on the degradation of organic compounds in the bottom seawater of Gamak bay. Nutrient salts showed high concentration distribution in the northern sea of Gamak bay from the influence of influx of urban sewage, restricted tidal current, and degradation of organic substances, in the southern and northern sea of Deukryang bay from the seaweed culture and the influence of influx of fresh water in the rainy season, and in the northern sea of Doam bay from the influx of large amount of fresh water from Tamjin river. This result of nutrient salts showed opposite concentration distribution with the one of chlorophyll a, which leads to a conclusion that this distributional characteristic is from the consumption of nutrient salts due to the activities of phytoplankton. We could know that dissolved inorganic nitrogen was the limiting factor. because N/P ratio was lower than 16 which is common in the coast, but it was higher than 16 in the spring season of Doam bay where the influence of fresh water was large enough. Marine sediments in the northern sea of Gamak bay showed higher concentration of AVS and COD than 0.2 mg/g-dry, 20 mg/g-dry each which are the fisheries environment standard in Japan(Association of marine resource preservation of Japan, 2000). And a little bit higher concentrations of AVS than the fisheries environment standard were detected in some area of Deukryang bay and Doam bay, but lower in most area that there seems to be little influence of organic pollutant. The elution of DIN and DIP from the sediments was highest in the northern sea of Gamak bay where the organic pollution was most serious and lowest in the Deukryang bay from the result of elution experiment of sediments. Average sedimentation flux was highest in Doam bay, but the sedimentation flux of organic carbon was highest in Gamak bay and the sedimentation flux of organic nitrogen was highest in Doam bay. The concentration distribution of heavy metals showed the highest concentration in the northern area of Gamak bay which is the place where the urban sewage is flowed in case of Gamak bay, and there were no specific space distribution characteristics in case of Deukryang bay and Doam bay. The Igeo classes of Cu, Cd, and Cr were 0 which is practically unpolluted in the surface sediments of Gamak bay, and Igeo classes of Pb and Zn were 0~1 which is practically unpolluted / moderately polluted. The Igeo class of As in the winter season was mostly 1, but was 2~3 in the summer season, which means the pollution of As in the research area was more serious than the other metal elements. The Igeo classes of Cu, Cd, Cr, Zn, and Pb in the surface sediments of Deukryang bay and Doam bay were 0 which is practically unpolluted, and Igeo class of As is 1~2 both in the summer and winter season and the sediments of summer season than the one of winter season showed relatively higher class. From these results, Deukrayng bay and Doam bay are considered to be less polluted by organic compounds and heavy metals in the sediments than Gamak bay.
