Current Korean swine industry with almost 10 million pigs face challenges such as the rise of production price due to expensive international corn price associated with instability of oil price, and customer’s rejection to the contamination of antimicrobial in food product. Improvements in productivity and appropriate management against residing disease are essential in order to solve these problems
Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is a non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA virus that has been causing a global problem since discovered in Canada in 1996. Since 2002 Porcine Circovirus associated disease (PCVAD) became serious in Korea and PCV2 caused huge economic damage to Korean swine industry by killing large numbers of weaned piglets. Since 2008, when PCV2 commercial vaccine (CV) and autogenous inactivated tissue vaccine (AITV) were used, the damage from PCVAD started to be alleviated.
This research was carried out to provide objective and scientific data on PCVAD and to evaluate the efficiency of PCV2 vaccine. The distribution of the major residing disease in Korean swine industry and it’s the relationship with the productivity was analyzed, and the survey on the efficacy of PCV2 vaccine release in 2008 was carried out in 245 farms all over Korea. Through the survey result the change in productivity before and after vaccination, the change in the rate of PCVAD occurrence, and the efficacy according to the type of PCV2 vaccine used in 2008 was analyzed. In order to test the objectivity of the survey result, in 4 farms with PCVAD, scientific evaluation of 250 piglets productivity in 20 weeks, change in PCVAD clinical symptom, and the suppression of virus due to vaccination was carried out.
The distribution of major wasting diseases (PRRSV, PCV2 and Salmonella spp.) was investigated per age group 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 20 weeks hence the relationship between the distribution of disease and the productivity of farms were also investigated. The result showed that farms with low productivity had higher possibility of having outbreak of residing disease. It was confirmed that as PRRSV infection begins after weaning (3weeks) and subsequently infection of PCV2 and Salmonella spp. after 11 weeks the excretion of pathogen is carried out so the possibility of transmission of disease is increased.
Having analyzed the survey result from commercial swine farms, through PCV2 vaccination, there was 16.9% reduction of mortality, 4.06 days reduction of marketing age, increase of 0.18 in heads per month per sow and increase of 3.88 in MSY. According to the type of vaccine, there was 18.4% reduction of mortality for CV and 16.33% reduction of mortality for AITV, and the vaccines’ productivity improving effect was confirmed as CV showed increase of 4.09 in M.S.Y. and AITV showed increase of 3.90 in MSY. In an experiment with PCV2 gene recombinant vaccine the group vaccinated with experimental vaccine showed average of 70.4% greater rate of weight gain which reflected death pigs for the experimental period, average of 1.5 lower clinical index, and average of 27.6% less mortality rate than the control group, and the PCVAD clinical symptom was confirmed to be suppressed by vaccine as the level of PCV2 IgG antibody of vaccinated group was maintained after weaning without reduction of maternal antibody titers.
Through this research objective data of PCV2 vaccine efficacy was obtained, therefore we do recommend to use those vaccines in farms suffering PCVAD to improve protection performance.
